Gyöngyöspata a 13-14. században Heves vármegye második legnagyobb települése volt – Eger után. Egykori jelentősége ma leginkább a falu központjában emelkedő háromhajós gótikus templomon látszik, melynek messze földön híres ékessége az úgynevezett Jessze-oltár.

A templom egy kis dombon áll a falu központjában, fehérre meszelt fala messziről világít, a szürke ablakkeretek és a falak éleinél meghagyott sötétebb kváderkövek pedig csak még jobban kiemelik az igazán fontos részleteket. Az épületet egy kis kőfal veszi körbe, ezen keresztül juthatunk hozzá közelebb. A gyönyörű gótikus templom helyén már a 12. században állt egy kisméretű, román stílusban épület templom, tornyának alapfalai ma is láthatóak a templomtoronytól északra. A 16. század elejétől kezdve több lépcsőben átépítették, illetve kibővítették a templomot, ennek ellenére meglehetősen egységes képet mutat, a gótikus templomépítészet stílusjegyeit felvonultatva. Először Károly Róbert innen származó tárnokmestere, Nekcsei Demeter adott megbízást a templom bővítésére, majd 1420 körül a Szécsényi család birtoklása idején épül a mai torony, végül az Országh és Losonczy családok birtoklása alatt épül meg a templom déli előcsarnoka. Mielőtt belépnénk az előcsarnokba, érdemes megfigyelni a mérműves ablakokat, illetve a torony nyolcszögletű tornyán körbefutó faerkélyt.

A háromhajós templom gótikus bordázott hálóboltozata alatt számos érdekesség hívja fel magára a figyelmet: a falakon 14. századból származó freskótöredékek láthatók, az emberfejeket formázó, konzolokra támaszkodó, színesre feltett boltozati bordák (kőosztást utánzó piros, fekete, sárga festés) és természetesen a messze földön híres Jessze-oltár.

A hatalmas, nyolc méter magas főoltár tényleg egyedülálló: a Jessze-oltár Jézus családfáját szemlélteti, mégpedig valóban egy fát mintázva. A családfa törzse a fekvő Jessze, azaz Dávid király apja oldalából nő ki, és ágazik többfelé. A teljes egészében fából faragott, gazdagon aranyozott műalkotást az 1650-es években lengyel mesterek készítették, ágain bibliai királyokat (köztük Salamont és Dávidot), prófétákat ismerhetünk fel, akiknek szobrai a Mária születését ábrázoló festményt veszik körbe, míg az oltár tetején Mária trónol, karján a kisdeddel. A monumentális alkotásban a fa tönkje egyben szentségtartó szekrényként is szolgál, felette a latin nyelvű felirat így szól magyarul: „És származik egy vesszőszál Isai törzsökéből, s gyökereiből egy virágszál nevekedik.” (Ézs 11, 1.), emellett pedig a fa törzsén az Énekek Énekéből olvashatunk részleteket.
