A fölülről nézve kínai szerencsesüti alakú hegy északnyugat–délkeleti csapású; elnyúlt tömbje a Mátra déli oldalának markáns szereplőjévé teszi a Havast. A hegyet tölgyes dominálta sziklaerdő borítja, csak néhány szűkebb kilátópontról tudunk kinézni, elsősorban déli irányba. A kilátópontok a hegy keleti gerincén sorakoznak, ahol a törmeléklejtőkön nem tudta megvetni a lábát az erdő. A csúcsot a Mátrára jellemző, festett csúcskő jelzi, mellette rozoga pihenőhelyet találunk a szűk tisztáson. A Havas gerincén a S+ jelzésű turistaút vezet át, a hegyen más jelzett ösvény nincs.

Lösz, homok, agyag és egy kis bor

A Mátra Magyarország legmagasabb hegysége, az Északi-középhegység vulkanikus eredetű tagja. Fő tömegét a miocén korban (kb. 15–18 millió éve) lezajlott andezites vulkanizmus építette fel, melynek maradványai a Kékes és a Galya-tető tömbjei. A hegység szerkezete összetett: a lávaöntésekkor szétterült andezittakarók és a robbanásos kitörésekkor keletkezett törmelékes vulkáni kőzetek (piroklasztikumok) mellett törésvonalak és vetődések tagolják. A peremeken üledékes kőzetek is megtalálhatók.

Az Alföld felé lejtő Mátraalját fiatalabb üledékes kőzetek (lösz, homok, agyag) borítják, amelyek a miocén tenger üledékeiből és a későbbi folyóvízi feltöltődésből származnak. A vulkáni és üledékes öv találkozása jól megfigyelhető az átmeneti tájban a Havas kilátópontjairól is. Az ilyen átmenetek egyik leglátványosabb indikátora a szőlőültetvények megjelenése: a jó talaj és a meleg, napos mikroklíma együttállásának köszönhetően a Mátraalján is kialakult borvidék, amit a Havasról is láthatunk.
