A hegytető értékei
Bár látszólag nem szolgál sok izgalommal a Somlyó, panorámáján kívül is találunk érdekességeket. A hegytetőn álló keresztet az egykori kápolna helyén állították, amelyhez kálvária vezetett, s ami az 1850-es években még megvolt – harangja ma az apci templomban szól. Ha figyelmesek vagyunk, egy bronzkori földvár sáncjait is feledezhetjük, de látványosabbak a Somlyó természeti kincsei: a mozaikos, árvalányhajas lejtősztyeppel, andezit sziklagyepekkel, felhagyott gyümölcsösökkel és szőlőkkel tűzdtelt délnyugati hegyoldal 2004., hazánk EU-csatlakozása óta a Natura 2000 hálózat része.
Vulkánok bástyái
Közel észak–dél irányú, egyenes vonalban sorakozik négy vulkáni kúp a Mátra délnyugati szegélyén: a dél felé alacsonyodó kvartett (Nagy-hársas, Somlyó, Kopasz-hegy, lőrinci Mulató-hegy) a központi rétegvulkán palástján felnyíló tektonikai törés mentén jött létre. Társaihoz hasonlóan a Somlyón is fejtettek kőzeteket, jellemzően andezitet – a régi bányák ma is jól kivehetőek a hegy nyugati oldalán.

- A buszmegállóból jelzetlen ösvényen, de a Somlyó hegyi tanösvény útjelző és ismertető táblái mellett kezdünk emelkedni, majd a P◼ jelzésekre térünk (1,2 km, 235 m szintemelkedés).
Parking
- A buszmegálló közelében, a Rákóczi Ferenc út padkáján hagyhatjuk az autót.
