A Nagy-hársas ma földtani értelemben egy nyugodt, stabil pont a hegység peremén, ráadásul magányosan kiemelkedő, magas tömbje miatt remekül látszik a szomszédos csúcsokról is – emiatt ideális helyszínnek tartották a geodéziai mérőtornyok hálózatának részévé tenni a hegyet. A '70-es évek végén fel is épült a 20-25 m magas betonhenger, amely már igen messziről is jól látható. Bár a néhai mérőtorony remek kilátópontnak tűnik, ezek látogatása tilos.
A Nagy-hársas további érdekessége, hogy Jobbágyi irányából több, mára felhagyott andezitbánya is „beléharap”. Az egyikben alakították ki az ország egyik legnagyobb hadiüzemét, ahol föld alatti létesítményekben gyártották a lőszert. Bár a létesítményt 1960. év végén bezárták, a máig őrzött és meg nem közelíthető terület azóta is a Honvédség kezelésében áll.

- Szurdokpüspöki, Szabadság út 5. buszmegállóból a P jelzésű turistaúton induljunk déli irányba, ez fölvezet a hegyre (3,2 km, 360 m szintemelkedés).
- Szurdokpüspöki vasútállomásról a Z jelzésű turistaúton induljunk keleti irányba, majd az útkereszteződésben forduljunk jobbra a P jelzésű turistaúton (3,6 km, 360 m szintemelkedés).
Parking
- Szurdokpüspökin a Gyöngyösi úton a P jelzésű turistaút leágazásánál van néhány kőzúzalékkal burkolt parkolóhely.
