Nature on the island of Rügen is multifaceted and worth experiencing. Large parts are under special protection: the west coast of Rügen and the island of Hiddensee are part of the Western Pomerania Lagoon Landscape National Park. The Jasmund peninsula, home to the famous chalk cliffs, was declared a national park in 1990 and parts of it were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. The Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve stretches from the former royal residence town of Putbus to the Mönchgut peninsula. Visitors to Rügen can relax in a rural idyll on the Bodden bays of northwest Rügen or in the villages of the Mönchgut peninsula.
Jasmund National Park
The Jasmund peninsula is probably one of the most spectacular landscapes on Rügen: the turquoise-blue sea, the steep white chalk cliffs and the unspoilt green beech forests inspire with their unique play of light and color. The viewpoints at the 118 m high Königsstuhl and the so-called Victoria View offer beautiful views. The national park is also home to the Königsstuhl National Park Center, which is well worth a visit with its 2000 m² informative exhibition area and special location directly on the Königsstuhl chalk cliff.

Fishing villages, lighthouses and other discoveries
Cape Arkona with its lighthouses, the area monument with bunker and the shore chapel is particularly worth a visit. But visitors to the island should also not miss the Granitz hunting lodge with its observation tower or the historic narrow-gauge train "Rasender Roland". But exciting and historic discoveries can be found all over the island: over 900 architectural monuments and 2000 archaeological monuments as well as numerous megalithic tombs, museums, theaters, studios, exhibitions and galleries provide an insight into the island's past and present. Rügen's Gothic brick churches, castles and manor houses also bear witness to history.
Discover Rügen actively
The biggest attraction of the Baltic Sea resorts and the seaside resorts on Rügen and Hiddensee are the islands' long, white sandy beaches. However, they are not only ideal for sunbathing, but are also popular with active vacationers such as hikers, Nordic walkers and cyclists in spring, autumn and winter. Whether hiking on the high shore path, over the Zicker mountains, in the coastal forest or on the Bodden-Panorama quality hiking trail - the island offers a wide range of options. Cyclists, on the other hand, can let the wind blow around their noses on a cycle tour around Putbus or from Bergen to Groß Schoritz on the banks of the Greifwalder Bodden.
The most beautiful routes
Mild maritime climate
But Rügen has even more to offer: The Baltic Sea and its mild maritime climate are characterized by healthy salty air and plenty of sunshine, as around 2000 hours of sunshine are regularly measured on Rügen and Hiddensee - around a third more than the German average.
