Harmony of Contrasts
On this diverse route on Germany's largest island, cyclists can expect endless sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, charming seaside resorts, and picturesque fishing villages. And a lot of untouched nature. Fabulous views lure at the famous chalk cliffs and there are also magnificent views of the sea and lagoon, meadows and forests from the hills in the island's interior.

The route starts in Sassnitz with a winding ride to the traditional fishing harbor. South of Mukran, cyclists pass the flint fields. Then it goes for 4.5 km along the “Colossus of Prora,” a former NVA barracks. Beyond that lie the Baltic Sea resorts Binz, Sellin, Baabe, and Göhren, known for their spa architecture, piers, and lovely promenades. Since 1895, the historic narrow-gauge railway “Rasender Roland” has connected the bathing resorts. A fresh breeze blows in the beech forests of the adjacent Granitz.
The next route section leads cyclists to the southern part of the island, onto the Mönchgut peninsula, which impresses with its unspoiled nature, quiet bays, and green land tongues. On the way through, the classicist-influenced Putbus can be explored.
From Altefähr, there is a fantastic view of the old town of Stralsund. The UNESCO World Heritage city on the other side of the Strelasund offers a nice contrast to the small fishing villages on the west coast of Rügen. On the way to Gingst, one passes through the almost uninhabited nature of Ummanz Island. Here, especially in spring and autumn, large flocks of cranes can be observed, and the cries and chirping of water and mudflat birds can be heard everywhere.
Cyclists reach the Wittow peninsula by ferry. It is particularly windy at the lighthouses at Cape Arkona, in the wild romantic north of the island. Nearby, the picturesque fishing village of Vitt nestles in a small bay. Along the almost endless sandy beach, cycling tourists then reach the highlight of the circular route – the Jasmund National Park. Here you can admire the famous chalk cliffs of Rügen and the ancient beech forests of the Stubbenkammer.
