Allgäu

The Allgäu extends from Nebelhorn to Mindelheim, from Lindau to Kaufbeuren. The region in the very south of Germany is divided into four districts. While the Alps in Ober- and Ostallgäu offer a wide range of sporting activities, the gentle hills in West- and Unterallgäu invite you to relaxing enjoyment of nature.

Varied Alpine foothills

What is special about the Allgäu nature area is the varied landscape: wide, open valleys and gentle hills in the foothills of the Alps, majestic mountains and peaks on the main Alpine ridge.

For example, the Große Krottenkopf, with its 2657 m the highest mountain of the Allgäu Alps, followed by the Mädelegabel with 2645 m and the Hochvogel with 2593 m. Between the rugged peaks lie refreshing rivers and lakes, wild and romantic gorges such as the Breitachklamm, traditional villages and historic towns. The best conditions to get active in motion while hiking, biking and skiing, to enjoy Alpine wellness in the middle of the mountains or to stroll through beautiful places. And all this combined with the warm hospitality of the people in Allgäu.

Skiing in the Allgäu

Soft snowflakes and bone-chillingly cold mountain nights are the guarantee for perfect piste conditions in the 27 ski resorts of the Allgäu. The largest and highest ski areas in the region are in the Oberallgäu, more precisely on the Nebelhorn and Fellhorn at around 2000 metres. In Ostallgäu, many people are familiar with the Alpspitze, the Breitenberg and the Tegelberg. In addition, there are numerous small ski lifts with family-friendly slopes and competent ski schools for children, beginners and returning skiers in the Oberallgäu as well as in the Ostallgäu and Westallgäu.

The Allgaeu offers ideal skiing and snowboarding conditions. Due to its elevation the Allgaeu Alps excite winter sport ...

Whether classic or skating, beginner or professional – everyone will find their favourite trail in the Allgäu. And those who prefer to experience Nordic sports passively simply head to Oberstdorf, the venue for international competitions.

Winter hiking in the Allgäu

If you want to enjoy the natural landscape in a relaxed way, set off on a hike through the snow-covered valleys. How about a tour through the icy landscape of the Breitachklamm gorge, for example? A torchlight hike or a fun toboggan ride are also experiences of a special kind. If you are looking for a suitable destination for your afternoon excursion, you will find rustic huts to warm up.

The typical landscape of the Allgäu, which impresses with its flowery meadows and forests in summer, transforms into a ...

Alpine Wellness in the Allgäu

Healthy by nature – In the Allgäu there is a rich treasure of remedies and traditional therapies. The treatments range from baths or packs with hay and moor to the therapeutic use of water and the modern interpretation of traditional teachings by Sebastian Kneipp and Johannes Schroth. Especially in the climatic health resort of Oberstaufen, you can relax and recharge your batteries far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and in front of a breathtaking mountain backdrop.

History of Allgäu

Relax in the city - in the Allgäu this is possible. Because in the winding alleys you can discover a lot. Old arches and city walls, rippling fountains, lively market squares and historic churches, monasteries and castles give the cities their very own character. Whether Kempten, Isny or Leutkirch - all cities have a historical townscape and a lively urban culture in common.

A very special highlight is a tour to one of the small Christmas markets in the Allgäu, for example the Bad Hindelang Adventure Christmas Market. If you are interested in Allgäu tradition, it is best to visit one of the Klausen or Bärbeletreiben, where young men and women dressed in furs, rags and masks parade through the villages, making a lot of noise with chains and bells and thus putting the dark figures and evil spirits of winter in their place.
