Kaufbeuren

Famous personalities come from Kaufbeuren, such as Saint Crescentia of Kaufbeuren (1682 - 1744), after whom the Crescentiakloster is named - an important pilgrimage destination. In the monastery church is the tomb shrine of Saint Crescentia, and in the monastery's own Crescentia memorial, valuable objects from the milieu of Saint Crescentia and the history of veneration are exhibited. Additionally notable is the monastery hill garden. Through the commitment of numerous volunteer helpers, a meditation garden dedicated to the Canticle of the Sun of Saint Francis was created between the monastery church and the town wall. Other famous daughters and sons of the town are the local poet Ludwig Ganghofer, the writer Sophie von La Roche, and the multiple award-winning literary prize winner Hans Magnus Enzensberger. The most prominent regular guest of Kaufbeuren was Emperor Maximilian I, who repeatedly liked to come to the town in the Allgäu and eventually even bought himself a house there.

Due to its favorable location between the big city of Munich and the Allgäu Alps, Kaufbeuren is ideal as a starting point for an Allgäu vacation. It is just as quick to get from Kaufbeuren to Munich as it is to go skiing or mountaineering in Oberstdorf. And for King Ludwig enthusiasts, it is only a stone's throw to the royal castles in Füssen.
