At 2592 m, the Hochvogel is one of the most prominent peaks in the Allgäu Alps. It captivates with its beauty of form and its solitary location.

The Hochvogel, like the neighbouring peaks, consists of main dolomite rock, which makes its flanks quite brittle due to erosion.

The ascent of the Hochvogel via the normal route is classified as a mountain tour with climbing sections of difficulty UIAA I. The tour starts at the Prinz-Luitpold-Haus and you reach the summit in about 2.5 hours via the Balkenscharte and the snow field "Kalter Winkel". The route from the Lechtal, which led via the Bäumenheimer Weg, has been closed since 2014 due to acute danger of rockfall.

Der offizielle Bergbericht von Bad Hindelang (KW 30 vom 20-26.07) schreibt zum Hochvogel: „Im Kalten Winkel befindet sich noch ein steiles Schneefeld. Zustieg und Abstieg über die Kreuzspitze ist zu empfehlen.“ Nach dem derzeitigen Stand würde ich nicht davon ausgehen, dass der Kalte Winkel bereits sicher ohne Steigeisen oder zumindest Grödel begehbar ist. Einen Pickel halte ich bei den derzeitigen Bedingungen nicht zwingend für jeden erforderlich, aber wer keine Erfahrung auf steilen Altschneefeldern hat, ist mit Pickel deutlich sicherer. https://www.badhindelang.de/bergbericht-sommer
