Experience the vibrant life of the city center, admire Landau’s architectural highlights, then quickly escape the hustle and bustle in Landau’s youngest park, the Südpark. As part of the Landesgartenschau, the green space was integrated into the residential park at Ebenberg and is now a destination for young and old. Extensive lawns invite sunbathing, a great playground, countless sports facilities, and the Vinothek Par Terre make Südpark in Landau unique.

    Author’s recommendation

At the Vinothek Par Terre on the Landesgartenschau grounds, you can taste wines from countless vintners of the Southern Wine Route. Treat yourself to a glass and enjoy the beautiful outdoor area.

Those with children will find the playground in front of the Vinothek well suited.

From Rathausplatz, head south along Marktstraße to the Obertorplatz, newly redesigned in 2008. The Französisches Tor, the southern city exit during fortress times, forms an inviting frame for rest with fan-shaped plane trees and box-shaped crowns of lindens along Reiterstraße, next to the bubbling water of the fountain.

From Reiterstraße, planted with fan-leaf trees, you reach a spacious residential complex constructed around 1920 through a passage. In the middle of the complex is a green area mainly planted with roses and lavender, bordered by several globe maple trees.

Continuing southward, you soon cross Marienring. You pass the splendid Marienkirche into the so-called Südstadt. The path to Cornichonstraße has been newly expanded and some amber trees have been planted. Now you reach the youngest of Landau's parks: the Südpark. It extends over the area of the former Landesgartenschau grounds and lies in the residential park at Ebenberg.

The park stretches from Theodor-Heuss-Platz directly at the main entrance to the playground in front of the Vinothek Par Terre. In between is the 1,800 sqm water garden. The sloping lawns are modeled after the tectonic faults of the Rhine Graben. Colorful perennial beds and numerous seating and play elements make the Südpark a meeting place for generations. On the west side, the park is accompanied by a row of three leather hornbeam trees, while winter lindens grow on the east side.

The so-called Green Fuge or landscape axis continues south of the railway line behind Vinothek. Crossing the bridge, you reach the Gardens of the Palatinate. Following the path further, you arrive at the impressive viewing tower, which offers views of Landau, the southern Palatine vineyards, the Palatinate Forest, the Rhine plain, and the 230-hectare Ebenberg. The area was formerly used as a military training ground and is now a national natural heritage site.

In front of the tower, the path branches off eastward towards the sports park at Ebenberg. A meeting place for young and old to do sports, relax, and enjoy. During opening hours, the path can be taken through the sports facility with skate park, green spaces, playground, basketball and beach volleyball courts. Otherwise, the path remains outside, along the Ebenberg nature parks.

In the area of the railway tracks, important compensation areas have been created for lizards, birds, and insects. The path leads through the Birnbach industrial park over Siebenpfeiffer-Allee, planted with flowering ashes, to the exit of the former Landesgartenschau grounds. From there, the path leads back to the city center via Friedrich-Ebert-Straße, planted with American ashes.
