On the night of the pogrom, the synagogue was set on fire and a few days later blown up and demolished.
Every year, on November 9th, the anniversary of the pogrom is observed. Hardly any other day has shaped the recent history of the city of Landau as much as that November day in 1938: The synagogue burned, apartments were looted and vandalized, residents of Landau were persecuted, imprisoned, expelled, and deported. In memory of the expelled Jewish families, Gunter Demnig, the Cologne artist and initiator of the now Europe-wide STOLPERSTEIN project,
Since the year 1968, the memorial by the artist Margot Stempel-Lebert has stood at the site of the former synagogue.
