The trail running route starts in the Pfronten district of Röfleuten and first leads over narrow paths through colorful mountain meadows. In Pfronten-Kappel, the route turns into the impressive Höllschlucht – a wild ravine with rushing waterfalls and shady forest paths. After a short detour over open alpine pastures, you reach the Kappeler Alp. Here there is a worthwhile place to stop with a wonderful view to the Ammergau Alps. The path continues past the pilgrimage church Maria Trost and over the Nesselwang waterfall trail up to the Alpspitze. Those who want can make a short detour to the peak before continuing towards the Edelsberg. On the descent, you pass the scenic Edelsberg Hut – another popular resting place. During the last kilometers, you enjoy magnificent views into the Pfronten valley. The route is 18.8 km long, of which 10.3 km run over natural trails.

    Author’s recommendation

Be sure to plan a stop at the Kappeler Alp or the Edelsberg Hut – Allgäu cheese spaetzle are rich in carbohydrates and an optimal energy source for trail runners ;)

    Safety information

Distance is not the decisive factor: Challenging terrain can easily increase the time you usually need per kilometer significantly. Therefore, plan generously the time you want to be on the trail. When you reach halfway, plan to turn back if in doubt. If you get more tired on the route than you thought, turn back.

Don’t forget water and food: Even on shorter runs, take food and enough water with you. For example, energy bars fit easily into any pocket. Drink continuously in small sips even if you are not thirsty. If you are unexpectedly out longer in the forest or mountains, sufficient provisions and water make an important difference.

Assess your running technique correctly: If in doubt, start on easy terrain and gradually increase to routes through demanding alpine terrain. Small quick steps are best, allowing faster reactions and better balance. Good shoes are important. Trail shoes with a good profile grip better on terrain and protect your feet from roots or stones. If necessary, have an expert advise you in a trail running specialty store to find the right shoes.

Use the right equipment: Temperatures can fluctuate greatly especially in the mountains, and thunderstorms appear faster than you think. Even in summer temperatures, warm reserve clothing can be helpful for lower temperatures in extreme cases and make unforeseen situations less unpleasant. And of course, always remember good sun protection.

Better safe than sorry: Inform someone about your planned route and when you should be back. Always take a mobile phone with you (fully charged) and a whistle. If you try a new route, take a close look at the course as well as the elevation and the technical demands of the route beforehand.
