Selected alternatives for you
In exchange for a significant but easily manageable elevation difference, we can conquer one of Buda's highest peaks, marvel at the panoramic view from the top of Nagy-Szénás, and finally look down almost like a map on Pilisvörösvár from the Rocky Mountain.

    Energy allocation

Although 220 meters of the route’s 300 meters elevation gain occur within the first 4 km, due to the distance this does not come with a steep incline, so this run is suitable even for those who like ascents less.

    Recommended period

Can be completed at any time of day. About half of the route is forested and shaded.

Our trail running section is supported by Dockyard. The route is recommended by the legendary Csaba Németh, Hungary's most successful active trail runner.

    Author’s recommendation

    • The single-track path does not appear on the app's map, so the short detour during which we can climb Kutya Hill, which is tied as the highest peak of the Buda Hills, is not visible on the drawn route. You will find in the detailed description when and where you can do this, we definitely recommend it.
    • If you have a sports watch suitable for navigation, you can download the track onto it using the "Download GPX" button above, but if you bring your phone, you can also navigate the run directly by opening it in the Természetjáró app.

    Safety information

    • The wind often blows on Nagy-Szénás due to sparse vegetation, which can be cold, and since we arrive there after a significant ascent, probably sweaty, it is good to have a windbreaker with us.
    • The rocks on Rocky Mountain invite photography; when stepping among and on them, be cautious because of the depth underneath!

    Itinerary

    • From the bus terminus, we start on the S trail, running along the wildlife fence to the revolving gate.
    • After entering the revolving gate, we continue on the K+ trail.
    • From the K+ trail, we take an unmarked path to the right and ascend to the peak stone of Kutya Hill, then return on the wide, unmarked forest road back to the K+ trail.
    • Arriving at Kutya Saddle, we continue on the K trail to the top of Nagy-Szénás.
    • After the peak, we descend on the K trail to Zsíroshegyi road, turn left onto the K, S, Z trail, and continue until we turn left onto the K▲ trail.
    • On the K▲ trail, we run out to Rocky Mountain, then return on the same route to the K, S, Z trail and continue on Zsíroshegyi road and afterwards on Bánya street, running back to the center of Nagykovácsi and the bus terminus.

    Detailed route description
From the bus terminus, we start on the S trail, continuing along Kossuth Lajos street: we run around the church between the church and the community center. At the end of the street (and the settlement), asphalt changes to dirt road and gently starts to rise. We pass through the “Gate of Szénás”, where the road becomes rocky, rises further, and the wildlife fence appears on the right side.

We run along the fence until we reach the “Why is the fence needed?” information board and the revolving gate next to it. Entering here, we leave the S trail and continue on the K+ trail, first a hundred-meter single-track section, then soft soil, normal forest road. About 1 km from the revolving gate, we reach below the peak of Kutya Hill. Although the map does not show it, there is an unmarked path to the right that leads up to the peak stone. This is only a 150-meter-long ascent, and from the peak, we descend the same way on a very wide unmarked forest road back to the K+ trail. There is no view from above, only the old carved trig point stone (HP stone), but it is worth climbing because although less known and popular than Nagy-Kopasz, Kutya Hill is tied as the highest mountain in the Buda Hills (559 m).

Continuing on the K+ trail, about 500 meters later we exit the forest and arrive at the Kutya Hill saddle, the atmospheric Fenyős clearing. This is also the end of the K+ trail; from here, we continue on the K trail arriving from the left, now running over sparse, shrubby, then increasingly bare hills. Lovely views open to the south towards Nagy-Kopasz and the sun-glittering summit roof of Csergezán Pál lookout, but do not stop here because shortly we will arrive at Nagy-Szénás, where an amazing panoramic view awaits us. From Kutya Saddle to here, only the last section to the cross is rocky; otherwise, the ground is comfortable to run on.

Continuing from the summit, we stay on the K trail, which after a slight descent merges briefly with the P trail, and on a steep single-track path disappearing into the bushes, we descend to the monument of the tourist house which once stood here. From here, we continue on the K trail. The previously soft soil changes to rocky forest road, and we descend through a pleasant pine forest to the highest houses of Nagykovácsi. We run past the radio tower, then reach the asphalt road, Zsíroshegyi road, where we turn left and continue on the K, S, Z trail.

At the end of Zsíroshegyi road, with a barrier, the asphalt also ends, and we run on normal dirt road to the clearing bordered by fences. Here we turn left onto the K▲ trail and fight a rocky, steep but short ascent through the pine grove before descending the same amount to reach Rocky Mountain. Here on the left, from the big rocks between the trees, there is a beautiful view over the Szénás hills and the deep valley beneath them. On the right side at the end of the clearing, we see to Hosszú Hill on the left. Below us lies Pilisvörösvár and to the right the Kevély hills.

Since the Rocky Mountain section is a dead end, we run back on the same path to Zsíroshegyi road. We run along the already known section to the end of the road, then continue on Bánya street straight back to Kossuth Lajos street, and there turn right back to the bus terminus.
