    Energy distribution

The route can be divided into three parts in terms of distance and elevation profile: the first with 200 m ascent to Kő-hegy (3 km), then after a relaxing downhill section, the second 260 m ascent to Bölcső Hill (4 km), and finally to the ridge of the Csikóvár peaks and the following descent (5.5 km).

    Recommended period

It can be completed at any time of day. The route is mostly wooded and shady. The 3 km northeastern-facing section from Kő-hegy to Lajos spring can be challenging and muddy for a long time during winter-spring snowmelt.

Our trail running column is supported by Dockyard. The route is recommended by the legendary Csaba Németh, Hungary's most successful active trail runner.

    Author’s recommendation

    • The buffet of the Kő-hegy mountain hut is open all year round, so it's useful to have some cash with you.
    • In the very middle of the route: at the Lajos spring you can definitely count on a water source.
    • If you have a sports watch suitable for navigation, you can download the track using the above "Download GPX" button, but if you carry a phone with you, you can also navigate by opening the run directly on it.

    Itinerary

    • In Pomáz, we start on Vróci Street on the Z mark and run on it to the Kő-hegy mountain hut.
    • From Kő-hegy to Lajos spring, we run on the S mark, with an optional detour in the middle to the S• mark, leading to the Csepel spring.
    • At Lajos spring, we switch to the Z▲ mark and run back to the starting point via Bölcső Hill and the Csikóvár peaks.

    Detailed description of the route

At the fork at the end of Vróci Street, turn right onto Őzláb Street, following the Z mark. After the asphalt ends on the slope, the dirt road begins to gently climb, then we enter Zengő valley, where we continue running on a single-track trail. In the scenic valley, we run first on the left side, then crossing to the right side at some point, going up to the top and continuing on a forest path to the junction, where we turn right onto a single-track trail while staying on the Z mark and arrive at the János spring.

The path steeply ascends above the spring, before joining a rocky forest road on which we run left for 50 meters to the blue barrier. Then we continue right on a steep and rocky single-track trail. The trail flattens and at a left turn we reach the first lookout point, but it's worth continuing a bit to the Petőfi rest stop, which offers a 180-degree panorama.

From Petőfi rest stop, we continue on a forest trail with soft ground, sometimes narrower or wider, with fantastic views of Pomáz and Szentendre on the right, until reaching the year-round open Kő-hegy Czibulka János mountain hut. Here, besides the new panorama, there are toilets and a buffet if needed.

From the hut, passing on the left side of the Kőhegyi lake, we run on the S mark, first on a single-track trail, then on a normal forest road that descends gently over 1 km. At a large T-junction, turn left and begin to ascend gently. About 200 m past the junction, the S• mark heads right for about 100 m to the atmospheric Csepel spring – this small detour is worth making even if you don't need water. At the top of the ascent, turn right onto a wide forestry and horse-riding road. The S mark soon continues as a parallel single-track trail on the left of this road until crossing the asphalt road leading to Lajos spring. The continuation of the S mark is not directly opposite but turns left onto the asphalt road slightly uphill. From here, we ascend to a large clearing under the Lajos spring tourist house, at the upper end of which, by turning left at the top of the stone steps in front of the buildings, we arrive at the permanently flowing, thus reliably water-suitable, Lajos spring.

Directly above Lajos spring begins the Z▲ mark. A very steep section follows: on a single-track trail, over 700 meters we ascend 130 meters to the highest point of the route: the volcanic Bölcső Hill. The path passes directly below the peak, where a new lookout is being built.

From the peak, we begin descending on a steep, very rocky and root-covered single-track section, then as the slope eases, the path broadens into a normal forest road. After a short section shared with the P+ mark, the Z▲ mark ascends again, and after 500 m descent, we reach the Nagy-Csikóvár and its triangulation point summit stone. From here, first a short but even steeper rocky-rooted descent follows, then an atmospheric ridge section to Kis-Csikóvár. Below it, at the crossing, turning left, we arrive at the Hubertus house (also known as Janda Vilmos keyhouse).

From the house, we run on comfortable ground in a forest atmosphere and environment until the first houses, where at the T-junction we turn right and run along Jeges Ernő Street and Ugralovica field back to our starting point on Vróci Street.
