FERIENSTRASSEN.INFO
When was the last time you traveled along a tranquil avenue through German landscapes? Far from the hustle and bustle of multi-lane highways, you can discover here the homeland on the side track.
The initiative for the German Avenue Road was born in 1990, when after the reunification numerous citizens expressed their concern that unique avenues might be sacrificed for road construction projects. The German Forest Protection Association, ADAC and other associations then started the project "Save the Avenues", the basis for today's Avenue Road.
Today, the German Avenue Road crosses all of Germany in ten stages and connects numerous attractions on both sides of the route. The starting point is located on Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The route south leads through the land of a thousand lakes, past numerous faithfully restored old towns with contemplative brick charm. The section Rheinsberg – Dessau – Wittenberg impresses with lakes and contrasts: splendid buildings next to scenic natural idylls.
From Dessau, the German Avenue Road leads through the Harz to Duderstadt. A region with mining tradition and noteworthy half-timbered towns. Through the federal state Saxony, the route leads from Wittenberg via Dresden to Plauen. Culturally rich cities with old alleys, castles, and palaces are worth a visit. Thuringia, the "green heart of Germany", is crossed on the way from Plauen or Duderstadt to Fulda. With historically significant places like Wartburg and unique natural wonders like the Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes.
Through Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate, the route from Fulda to Bad Kreuznach offers, besides the impressive volcanic landscapes of the Vogelsberg, the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the Romans. From Bad Kreuznach to Freudenstadt, the German Avenue Road connects the Upper Rhine Plain with the heights of the Black Forest. In Baden-Württemberg, the route leads from Freudenstadt to the Island of Reichenau and offers a variety of opportunities to undertake time travels into long-past epochs.
Since 2009, the German Avenue Road also crosses North Rhine-Westphalia: from Höxter to Dortmund first through the Teutoburg Forest, then the Münsterland, before finally reaching the Ruhr area at Dortmund. Via the Bergisches Land the route leads southwards to Bad Honnef.
Which stage travelers choose and which destinations they plan for sightseeing and stay remains up to their personal interests. Not only the route itself is an experience – but also the numerous sights along the German Avenue Road and its surrounding area are worth a visit.
The German Avenue Road makes it possible to experience:
> traveling without haste along a tranquil avenue through German landscapes;
> off the route, from northeast to southwest, to discover well-known sights and charming small towns;
> and to experience the compatibility of nature, mobility, culture, and tourism.
