The circular hike from Sasbach leads through a wonderful natural landscape with many orchards, vineyards and beautiful mixed forests. It offers fantastic views of the surrounding Black Forest mountains, the Rhine plain, Strasbourg and the Vosges.
The starting point Sasbach is located in Ortenau, on the edge of the Upper Rhine Plain and on the western edge of the Black Forest. Historically important for the community was the Battle of Sasbach on July 27, 1675, when troops of Louis XIV under Marshal Turenne and imperial soldiers under commander Raimondo Montecuccoli clashed. Marshal Turenne was killed by a cannonball during the battle. Today this is commemorated by the Turenne Monument - a granite obelisk – as well as the small museum, a German-French branch museum of the House of History Baden-Württemberg. After Napoleon, Turenne is considered the most significant field marshal of France.
Sasbachwalden on the Badische Weinstraße is counted among the most beautiful communities in Germany. Wine growing has been practiced here since around 1600. However, during the Thirty Years' War, the Black Forest became almost deserted. "The old God still lives!" a young man joyfully shouted after he found a young girl. A stone image block now commemorates their meeting place. The vineyard location also received the name "Alde Gott".
Other highlights of this tour are two typical Black Forest farm mills.

Roadbook
We start our hiking route in Sasbach at the Gasthaus Ochsen (bus stop) and follow the yellow diamond eastward into Oberdorfstraße, where after about 100 m the hiking trail leads over the Sasbach at the signpost "Bridge at Lindenplatz". Passing the church and later the "cemetery", you reach the "Turenne Monument".
We continue following the yellow diamond past the location "Klammsbosch" to the signpost "Herrenwegel", where we turn left towards "Obersasbach Bridge". Passing the "Grindehalle" and an ancient linden tree, we reach the Toni Merz Museum with a beautiful view of Obersasbach,
Passing the "Obersasbach Church" and the "cemetery", we continue over the "Sulzmatte" towards the "Obersasbach Winterbach", to the "Sasbachwaldener Winterbach". From the "Alde Gott Bildstöckle", we hike a bit on the Ortenau Wine Path (marked with a wine cluster on a red diamond), via "Sasbachwalden/Am Werth" to the signpost "Langert", where we follow the yellow diamond mark again.
Past the "Dr. Wagner Clinics", we go to the "Hohacker". Here a short detour to the listed historic center of Sasbachwalden is possible (walking time about 20 minutes round trip).
Heading towards Straubenhof Mill, we finally walk above the swimming pool to the bridge over the Sasbach at the signpost "Kurhaus", and continue along the Sasbach upstream (wooden sign Mühlenweg).
Past the "minigolf", we hike to the Vierthaler vineyard and continue straight on the Mühlenweg always upstream along the Sasbach until after 1 km we finally reach the "Straubenhof Mill".
After the mill, we continue towards Hörchenberg, first on a grassy path, then left onto the paved road to Ferienhof Wild, where we climb stairs always following the yellow diamond, first through the forest, later with beautiful views to the "Hörchenberg" and the signpost "Gaishölle oben". Here we temporarily leave the yellow marking to follow the blue diamond to "Hohritt", where we also reach the highest point of our hike at 700 m.
Here we switch back to the yellow marking (the signpost is below the Hohritt at the road and a bit in the forest) and hike left towards "Grobenkopf", further on the circular trail "AugenBlick Obersasbach" to the "Fatima Grotto" and "Augenblick Obersasbach".
Above the pond of "Aubach" stands Aubach Castle. It is privately owned and cannot be visited – until 2009 the entertainer Dieter Thomas Heck lived here. We therefore continue straight, cross the Aubächle again at the signpost "Engert" and hike towards "Kloster Erlenbad". Shortly after, we cross the road between Lauf and Obersasbach to Kloster Erlenbad. Here we leave the circular trail "AugenBlick Obersasbach" and go straight towards Sasbach via "Hohfeld" to the signpost "Zehntfrei", where we can continue straight to the center of Sasbach. Alternatively, we turn left to the Kühnerhof with farm mill and mill pub. At Kühnerhof we reach the road (Oberdorfstraße). There we turn right and walk directly to the right of the Sasbach on Oberdorfstraße the last 500 m without marking back to the starting point.
