The 25-hectare Cseke Lake, artificially created about 200 years ago but fed by natural karst springs, is one of the most inviting sights of the City of Waters in its romantic naturalness.

The water surface, almost overshadowed by the neighboring Old Lake, is an excellent excursion destination for groups or individuals seeking relaxation at any time of year. Its great advantage is that although embedded in an urban environment, thanks to its park-forest design, you can escape the city hustle and bustle. The slightly over 3 km long lake round route is fully accessible by wheelchair and can be toured independently even with some hiking experience. Its gently sloping, sheltered shore, the weeping willows leaning over the lake, and the reeds along the shore provide natural protection against weather extremes at any season.

At the beginning of our hike, we can explore the English Garden that once networked the entire town of Tata, whose wide promenades surround a combination of romantic ruins, caves, and small lakes. In this natural landscape fitting the small-town environment, the path adapts to the surroundings with varying road surfaces. The asphalt, gravel, or packed forest paths are uniformly good quality with hardly any obstacles along the way. The beautiful lake shore, attractive in all seasons, offers a variety of leisure activities (group picnics, outdoor games, jogging, meditation, etc.), among which fishing is the most popular.

Because of the easy route and the scenic environment, we also recommend this hike for wheelchair users with mild rehabilitation who seek meaningful relaxation free from the hardships of survival hikes with their family and children.

    Author’s recommendation

    • The route is recommended independently for experienced wheelchair users who are actively mobile.
    • A walking companion is recommended for those using hospital wheelchairs and for beginners with injuries.
    • The route is also recommended for athletes using wheelchairs equipped with handy or electric drives, as the wide, acceptable-surfaced promenades and paths allow independent mobility, and in case of accident or technical failure, there is a good chance to ask for help from other visitors.
    • Although there is an accessible restroom at the Palm House Event Center, unfortunately it is only available to guests of the current event. Alternatively, hikers should use the accessible restroom of the New Kayak House Ecotourism Center if needed (1 km from here, on the shore of the Old Lake).
    • There are no dining options on the shore of the lake; it is advisable to purchase food and water in the town or bring them with you.
    • Carry a spare inner tube and an appropriate pump.
    • In case of changeable weather, bring a raincoat/umbrella.
    • If possible, it is advisable to schedule the hike on a weekday, as during the season and in good weather, many locals, tourists, and anglers visit the lakeside.

    Itinerary:

    • Starting from the Palm House, head towards the English Garden, then reach the shore of Cseke Lake by going around the Small Castle.
    • On the shore, head right and follow the lakeside path.
    • Make a detour on the southeastern side of the lake, then return to the shore.
    • Small detours can be made to the islands.
    • Return along the shoreline promenade to the English Garden, then to the Palm House, the starting point of our hike.

    Detailed description of the route:

Our route starts from one of the most beautiful buildings of the English Garden, the Palm House, which operates as an event venue. Heading southeast along a short, winding, gravel path, we immediately find ourselves in the English Garden. On our right, a small stream bed accompanies us, with a ruin on its shore, then we pass an open-air stage used as an amphitheater and the former Small Castle of the Esterházys. The park's promenade slopes toward Cseke Lake; here it is advisable to choose the lanes lightly sprinkled with broken limestone among the small, garlanded paths if you want to avoid getting stuck with a wheelchair.

Approaching the lake shore, scattered benches and resting places welcome us; we circle the artificially built channel of the Mirror Spring’s water, then reach the shore of Cseke Lake, and before us unfolds the majestic water surface. From here, we start our lakeside round on the gravel surface, separated from the lake water by a wooded park area. Occasionally, due to the sight of a giant plane tree or the canopy bending over the water, it is worth stepping off the path directly onto the lake shore. Next to us stretches a fence among the trees; on the other side lies the massive park of the training camp reserved for Olympians. This part of the lake bed is fortified with a low stone wall protecting the park, and since it is a fishing paradise, dedicated anglers watch the fish here even in windy and rainy weather. At the end of the fence is a small crescent-shaped Turkish mosque, although no Turks have ever lived here; this is an artificial building fitting the romantic aura of English gardens.

As we gradually distance ourselves from the lake, the plane tree-park atmosphere transforms into a regular deciduous forest. On a solid, packed, wide path, we slowly turn north, then the forest path splits; the lower path curves back closer to the lake. The right branch favors wanderers: here, on softer, composted soil amidst denser forest, we can take a detour that reconnects in a loop a few hundred meters later on the eastern side of the lake. At a pleasant clearing here, it is worth taking a short break.

We arrive at the scenic part of our lake round on the northeastern side: three small islands connect to our route with wooden bridges in succession. Although the bridges are accessible, their small edges and cracked concrete ramps require some wheelchair experience. The dramatic, artificially created landmasses attract with beautiful, open panorama to the water’s edge; it is definitely worth exploring the islands. The tree-surrounded lake, reeds, well-maintained shore, water birds, and fishing spots create a peaceful landscape with a compelling effect.

We continue straight north, gradually the forest environment is replaced by a more urban area. At the northeastern tip of the lake, there is a small boat dock and next to it a once idyllic pub and beer tavern, along with the building of the fishing supervisory authority. On the northern shore of the lake, we can roll on a straight, solid surfaced promenade while the sparse lakeside vegetation offers a full panorama of the lake’s length. The promenade, segmented by benches, connects straight to the Damjanich Street entrance of Cseke Lake—but this is not accessible due to a staircase.

We sharply turn left and return to the park that proudly holds the title of Hungary’s first English garden, established at the end of the 18th century at the request of Count Ferenc Esterházy. After the baroque French gardens following regular shapes, the English gardens inspired by nature with its idealized form showcase the irregular placement of plants, winding paths, waterfalls, and caves that formed the “required” elements. French architect Charles Moreau designed the ensemble of ruins here, which, due to lack of monument protection, even incorporated parts of the 12th-century Vérteszentkereszt Abbey. These parts are not accessible by wheelchair but can be admired from the promenade.

At the southern corner of the English Garden, we return to our starting point, the parking lot next to the Palm House.
