Roadbook
Following the Velo visavis signposts towards Niederwürzbach, the route still goes through Lautzkirchen on local streets, but from the railway crossing at the town's exit, we are guided onto the new bike path through the Würzbachtal valley. We pass Breitermühle and meet the 7-Pond Route with the blue-green frog logo in Niederwürzbach. There is an option for a shortcut by cycling directly via Oberwürzbach to Sengscheid, but this would mean missing some ponds with the most beautiful path sections as well as St. Ingbert with its attractive pedestrian zone. Therefore, we follow the signs to Geistkircher Hof.
The Würzbacher Pond is our largest body of water on the route. Immediately after the leisure facility with beer garden lies, on the left, the Hotel-Restaurant Annahof with its historic masonry and a beautiful courtyard that invites you to linger. It is attractive along the pond before a dreamily beautiful valley landscape opens up ahead of us.
On newly developed paths, one rides along valley meadows and forest edges through the Geißbach and Frohnsbach valleys. If you watch carefully, shortly after the Würzbacher Pond you will even find, on the left-hand side, a crystal-clear spring bubbling from the sandy underground between some boulders. Several beautiful spots along the route are suitable for picnic breaks.
At Geistkircher Hof, caution is needed when crossing the busy country road. A narrow path leads briefly into the forest. The cool forest air for the next 3 km feels good, and riding pleasantly downhill, the next pond is already before us.
The Glashütter Pond, with water that is not quite clear but clean, is an idyllic small reservoir embedded in the landscape. A lawn on the opposite shore also offers a picnic spot. Alternatively, you can rest at Glashütterhof, a guesthouse with a beer garden, or at the kiosk right by the pond.
Shortly after, we reach the Wombacher Pond, a fishing pond with a water fountain, benches for resting, and a managed fisherman's hut. On warm days, a water treading facility there invites you to cool your feet. We arrive in St. Ingbert. Our route leads very attractively along paved bike paths past the leisure pool 'das blau' through the city park and then right through the pedestrian zone opened for cyclists. Along the Alte Schmelz, a former ironworks now under monument protection, it goes on to Rentrisch. We continue to follow the Velo visavis logo to Sengscheid. About 60 meters of altitude have to be overcome before we can reward ourselves with cool drinks in a nicely situated beer garden in Sengscheid.
Pleasantly downhill it goes over the next 6 km through the entire Grumbach valley. Cycling can hardly be more relaxed: we glide almost effortlessly through the beautiful valley landscape to Schafbrücke. On side streets, we are led to the access road to Halberg, the seat of Saarländischer Rundfunk (Saarland Broadcasting). But only a few meters go uphill before our path turns left towards Brebach. Around the Halberg, through Brebach, and over the St. Arnualer meadows, we come to the Saar and reach the Stadenanlagen via the Daarler Bridge by the heating plant.
The Stadenanlagen are certainly the most popular green spaces in Saarbrücken. In the middle, two attractive beer gardens invite you to linger on warm days one after the other. Directly along the Saar, we pass the Saarland State Theater and meet the turnoff to St. Johanner Markt under the Alte Brücke. Anyone who wants can have a last stop here in one of the many pubs, bistros, and restaurants before continuing along Berliner Promenade to the Congress Hall and then to Saarbrücken main station.
