Die gotische dreischiffige Basilika wurde um 1390 vollendet und zählt zu den bedeutendsten Baudenkmälern im südwestdeutschen Raum.
Eindrucksvoll ist ihr Innenraum: Kunstvoll gearbeitete Grabdenkmäler der Grafen von Nassau-Saarbrücken (Mitte 15. Jhd. bis um 1620) können hier besichtigt werden. Künstlerisch wertvollstes Grabmal ist das des Grafen Johann III. (gest. 1472) von Nassau-Saarbrücken und seiner beiden Gemahlinnen.
Charakteristisch für das Äußere der Kirche ist die Turmhaube, im Jahr 1746 von Stengel geschaffen.
Der vor der Stiftskirche liegende Marktplatz und die angrenzenden Straßen zeigen noch die Siedlungsstruktur um 1760. Etwa 15 min Fußweg sind es aus der Innenstadt nach St. Arnual, dem "Dorf in der Stadt" und einem der ältesten Stadtteile Saarbrückens mit seinem idyllischen Marktplatz.
