Saarland Museum – Old Collection
Art history gallery featuring works from the Renaissance to the 19th century
The Old Collection spans the Middle Ages and the Renaissance right through to the 19th century. Alongside prime examples of German and Dutch landscape and still-life painting, particular highlights include the portraits of the 18th-century princes of Saarbrücken, the artefacts – both paintings and artefacts – of early industrialisation, as well as characteristic 19th-century paintings (including works by Franz von Lenbach, Carl Blechen and Carl Spitzweg). The Old Collection is exhibited in two historic buildings connected by a glass wing: the Kreisständehaus and the Schlosskirche. The latter served as the burial place of the Princes of Nassau-Saarbrücken in the 18th century.
