There is a lot to discover on the 11.3-kilometre-long first section of the Münchweiler Höhenwanderweg, which mostly runs along wide, well-maintained forest paths, as nature shows itself from its most beautiful side here. From Münchweiler train station in the Rodalbtal valley, the trail climbs up to around 480 meters in altitude. Light-flooded mixed forests, mighty rocks, magnificent views and pure nature characterize this circular tour over the mountains north of the municipality. If you are lucky, you can observe wild animals in their natural habitat. One of the highlights is the Bauwald Rock, a monumental witness to history made of red sandstone, from whose rocky plateau you can enjoy a magnificent view. Further along the trail, you finally reach the Wildsaufelsen rock, which also invites you to rest and linger with its seating area. Overall, the trail - especially from Kurzelberg - impresses with its fantastic views of the UNESCO Palatinate Forest-North Vosges biosphere reserve with its seemingly endless forests and regional sights such as Gräfenstein Castle.

UFFBASSE! - Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature

Fire & smoking - Lighting fires, smoking and barbecues are strictly prohibited in the forest and must be avoided at all costs! This is the only way to prevent fires and the resulting damage to nature and wildlife.

Be considerate when out and about - Always behave in a forward-looking, friendly and considerate manner towards everyone you meet along the way.

Nature conservation - Stay on the designated paths and avoid unnecessary noise when you are out in nature. Leave the forest at dusk at the latest so as not to disturb the rhythm of nocturnal animals.

Picnic & garbage - Remember to take a garbage bag with you and take your garbage home with you. Only use the furnished rest areas for breaks and picnics.

Dogs on a lead - Please keep your dog on a lead at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you for it.

    Safety information

Caution - The Bauwalder Fels can only be climbed via a steep path, which should be considered by everyone based on their own fitness level. Under no circumstances should you climb up or over the safety rails (danger to life).

Hiking on nature trails and paths - Despite the markings, for safety reasons we recommend that you always have a corresponding hiking map with you so that you can quickly find a safe area in the event of a thunderstorm or an emergency, for example. Please be aware of trail closures and detour!

Particularly in the fall, you should also be aware that leaves lying on the ground can hide uneven surfaces, roots, stones or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or rainstorms, trees can still fall over or branches can fall down. Especially in adverse weather conditions, muddy and slippery passages can occur on near-natural paths. This type of path impairment must always be expected on hikes. If you are of the opinion that certain sections of the trail are not passable, it is better to avoid them.

In addition, not all rocks or slopes are secured with ropes or railings. Sure-footedness is required in some places. Rocks should not be climbed, especially by children, as the brittle sandstone in particular poses a risk of falling for non-professionals. Never climb over railings and fall protection (danger to life).

Note - We always endeavor to announce all closures that occur due to forestry work or hunting parties on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations in which hiking trails are closed and we may not have been informed. Should you unexpectedly encounter such a trail closure or detour, we ask you to follow the instructions for your own safety.

Notes on the adjacent core zone "Source area of the Wieslauter" - The core zone "Source area of the Wieslauter" borders on the far east of the tour - east of the Wildsaufelsen. The protection provisions of § 7 of the State Ordinance on the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve must therefore be observed there. Entering the core zone is only permitted on marked paths and at your own risk. It is also forbidden to leave the paths. Fallen trees and branches must always be left lying around in core zones. Standing dead or dying trees will not be felled. Falling branches or falling trees must therefore be expected at all times and without prior notice. Paths and trails are no longer cleared or maintained, even if they may still be included in hiking maps. In the event of an emergency, rescue operations are only possible to a limited extent and under difficult conditions!

    Roadbook

From Münchweiler/Rodalb railroad station, the trail first leads along the forest road opposite and then turns left in a north-westerly direction up a relatively steep hill. At the next fork - after about one kilometer - keep right. The path now heads south for about 200 meters before turning left to head east to the summit of the 462 m high Kurzelberg. On the way, you can take a short break at a seating area on the side of the path to recover from the rather steep ascent. Once on the Kurzelberg, you can enjoy the wonderful panoramic view of the nature park forests, the ruins of Gräfenstein Castle near Merzalben and the Luitpold Tower on the Weißenberg from various points.

From here, the trail initially heads south towards Grindberg. There is also a seating area there where you can take a break. Finally, you walk around the Grindberg and follow the path further and further to the northeast. At around 4.9 kilometers, you finally turn right below the Imsenkopf and walk a little to the east. Approx. 500 to 600 meters further on, the trail finally turns southwest and later continues eastwards around the Bauwalder Kopf.

At around 6.8 kilometers, you should definitely plan a short, steep detour to the left to Bauwalder Felsen. This mighty colossus of red sandstone rises high above the treetops and offers a magnificent view over the Palatinate Forest, the Wasgau and even across to the Northern Vosges. To enjoy this rewarding view, you first have to climb about 200 meters steeply uphill. Seating groups on and at the foot of the rocky plateau offer the opportunity to catch your breath and take a short break.

Back on the main path, you then hike another 500 meters through beautiful, light-flooded mixed forests to the Wildsaufelsen. Along the way, you can catch glimpses of the nearby Gräfenstein Castle between the trees. The Wildsaufelsen also has a comfortable seating area that invites you to rest, linger and have a picnic before descending - always in a south-westerly direction - towards the "Sauweiher" hiking parking lot. Once there, you have already covered almost 10 kilometers and can - if you wish - take another break at an artistically designed seating area.

After passing the new cemetery, you reach Römerstraße via a section of the Konrad-Adenauer-Ring. Follow this road - past the old cemetery and the elementary school - to the center of Münchweiler an der Rodalb with the Catholic parish church of St. Georg. Here at Luitpoldplatz, turn right into the main road. After the level crossing, keep left to return to the starting point via Bahnhofstraße.

At the end of the circular tour, the restaurants in Münchweiler offer the opportunity to stop for a bite to eat to round off a successful tour in a cozy atmosphere.

Directly adjacent to the railroad line - between the community center and the Rotensteinhalle - is the municipality's pretty community park. In addition to an idyllic little lake, which is home to fish and a few families of ducks, this extensive park offers various play, sports and leisure facilities. This park is well worth a short detour, especially with children.

    Insufficient information or not accessible.

    fully accessible

    Completely accessible and fully usable.

    Info in leichter Sprache:
Der schöne Weg führt durch den Wald und an Felsen vorbei, von denen aus man eine tolle Aussicht hat. Er ist manchmal schwierig zu gehen und etwas gefährlich, man kann sogar abstürzen. Auch stehen nicht überall Schilder. Man muss dann dem Logo folgen. Daher nehmen Sie immer eine Begleitperson mit, damit Sie sich nicht weh tun oder verlaufen.
