Well-preserved medieval castle ruins of Gräfenstein on the Schloßberg hill near Merzalben.

The ruins of Gräfenstein Castle are a jewel from the Staufer period. They stand on an oval rock plateau made of red sandstone, approximately 12 metres high, about 2 km east of Merzalben. The castle, affectionately known as ‘Merzalber Schloss’ by the locals, is also the namesake of the Gräfensteiner Land hiking region and part of the Gräfensteinweg and Alter Postweg trails. It is also known for its seven-sided keep, which is unique in Germany and offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the seemingly endless forests of the Palatinate Forest-North Vosges Nature Park biosphere reserve. At regular intervals, a rustic castle festival takes place on the Gräfenstein, which attracts numerous guests from near and far and brings the Middle Ages to life. Costumed castle tours are also offered. The easiest way to reach the Gräfenstein is from the Schäferei hiking car park. A steep path leads directly up to it in about 10 minutes.

At the foot of the mountain in the Hafertal valley is the Gräfensteinhütte (06395 - 7845) hut, run by the local Palatinate Forest Association. It has a wonderful outdoor terrace, a children's playground and free parking.

Burg Gräfenstein

not classified

Insufficient information or not accessible.

fully accessible

Completely accessible and fully usable.

partially accessible

Reasonably usable, but not completely accessible.

Info in leichter Sprache:
