Münchweiler Höhenwanderweg - complete route
Part 1 of the tour begins and ends at the train station. From here, the trail leads up to the Kurzelberg and its beautiful views. The rest of the tour is lined with dense forests and impressive colossi of red sandstone such as the Bauwald rock, the Wildsaufelsen or the Rotenstein natural monument with its stone refuge, all of which - like the Kurzelberg - invite you to rest, picnic and linger with their various seating options.
Please note: The Wildsaufelsen is the junction between Part 1 and Part 2, where you can decide whether to follow the markings for Part 1 back to the station or follow the markings for Part 2 towards Rotenstein and hike the entire route described here.
Along the way, you can enjoy great views over the Palatinate Forest Nature Park with its sights such as Gräfenstein Castle and the Luitpold Tower. On a clear day, hikers can even see the Wasgau and the Northern Vosges, literally immersing themselves in a "sea of forests".
The last section of the high-level hiking trail part 2 down into the romantic Waschtal valley with its small waterfall, the idyllic stream and the Annaweiher pond with its crystal-clear water, in which the forest and sky are reflected, offers a completely different panorama - an oasis of peace and tranquillity.
From here, you first head to the "Sauweiher" hiking parking lot with its cozy seating area (start and finish point of the high-altitude hiking trail part 2) and from there - following the markings of part 1 - back to the starting point at the train station.
At the end of the circular tour, the restaurants in and around the village offer the opportunity to stop for refreshments to round off an all-round successful tour in a relaxed atmosphere. The high-level hiking trail can also be hiked in shorter stages. Descents back to the village are possible at several points.
UFFBASSE! - Campaign for considerate interaction in nature
Fire & smoking - Lighting fires, smoking and barbecues are strictly prohibited in the forest and must be avoided at all costs! This is the only way to prevent fires and the resulting damage to nature and wildlife.
Be considerate when out and about - Always behave in a forward-looking, friendly and considerate manner towards everyone you meet along the way.
Nature conservation - Stay on the designated paths and avoid unnecessary noise when you are out in nature. Leave the forest at dusk at the latest so as not to disturb the rhythm of nocturnal animals.
Picnic & garbage - Remember to take a garbage bag with you and take your garbage home with you. Only use the furnished rest areas for breaks and picnics.
Dogs on a lead - Please keep your dog on a lead at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you for it.

Safety information
Caution - The Bauwald rock can only be climbed via a steep path, which everyone should consider based on their own fitness level. The safety barriers on the rock and on the Rotenstein natural monument must not be climbed on or over under any circumstances (danger to life).Hiking on nature trails and paths - Despite the markings, for safety reasons we recommend that you always have a suitable hiking map with you so that you can quickly find your way to a safe area in the event of a thunderstorm or emergency, for example. Please be aware of trail closures and detour!
Particularly in the fall, you should also be aware that leaves lying on the ground can hide uneven surfaces, roots, stones or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or rainstorms, trees can still fall over or branches can fall down. Especially in adverse weather conditions, muddy and slippery passages can occur on near-natural paths. This type of path impairment must always be expected on hikes. If you are of the opinion that certain sections of the trail are not passable, it is better to avoid them.
In addition, not all rocks or slopes are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in some places. Rocks should not be climbed, especially by children, as the brittle sandstone in particular poses a risk of falling for non-professionals. Never climb over railings and fall protection (danger to life).
Note - We always endeavor to announce all closures that occur due to forestry work or hunting parties on this platform. Nevertheless, there are situations in which hiking trails are closed and we may not have been informed. Should you unexpectedly encounter such a trail closure or detour, we ask you to follow the instructions for your own safety.
Notes on the adjacent core zone "Source area of the Wieslauter" - The eastern part of the tour runs for long stretches along the core zone "Source area of the Wieslauter". The protection provisions of § 7 of the State Ordinance on the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve must therefore be observed there. Entering the core zone is only permitted on marked paths and at your own risk. It is also forbidden to leave the paths. Fallen trees and branches must always be left lying around in core zones. Standing dead or dying trees will not be felled. Falling branches or falling trees must therefore be expected at all times and without prior notice. Paths and trails are no longer cleared or maintained, even if they may still be included in hiking maps. In the event of an emergency, rescue operations are only possible to a limited extent and under difficult conditions!

Roadbook
From now on, it's downhill again. After approx. 8 km or 2 hours of hiking, you will come to the signpost "Zum Bauwalder Felsen", a mighty rock that rises high above the treetops and offers a magnificent view over the Palatinate Forest, the Wasgau and even across to the Northern Vosges. For this worthwhile detour, which offers further picnic opportunities on the rock plateau and at the foot of the sandstone colossus, you have to climb about 200 m uphill.
Back on the main trail, you now hike to the Wildsaufelsen, which also offers the opportunity to rest with its seating. This is also the junction between part 1 and part 2 of the tour. If you are tired, follow the signs for part 1 back to the starting point at the station.
However, if you also want to tackle part 2 and thus the total of 16.5 km, simply follow the signs for the high-altitude hiking trail part 2 via the Rotensteiner Pfad in the direction of the Rotenstein natural monument. On the way, after a short ascent, hikers are treated to a magnificent view of Gräfenstein Castle, the landmark of the Gräfensteiner Land vacation region. The view continues to the Weißenberg with the Luitpoldturm and the Großboll and Spitzboll with the adjacent Wetthöhe.
The highlight of the hike on the Münchweiler Höhenwanderweg trail is the mighty sandstone colossus Rotenstein with its stone refuge, which once again invites you to linger and rest. Here, too, hikers will be overwhelmed by the extent and diversity of the Palatinate Forest Nature Park. Autumn - also known as "Indian summer" - conjures up a symphony of colors from the magnificent mixed forests. A visit to the high-altitude hiking trail is particularly worthwhile at this time of year.
Part 2 continues downhill on a path into the romantic Waschtal valley with the idyllic Annaweiher pond. A variety of flora and fauna surrounds the waterfall, which is also located in the valley and is unparalleled in its intensity in the Palatinate. The pond, with its crystal-clear water reflecting the forest and sky, offers hikers an oasis of tranquillity. It is still home to the kingfisher, which you can watch fishing if you are lucky. Other animal inhabitants of the pond are fish, ducks and cute nutrias.
From Waschtal, the markings for part 2 lead us directly back to Münchweiler an der Rodalb to the "Sauweiher" hiking parking lot with its comfortable seating area, which is also the start and finish point of part 2.
From here, follow the markings of the high-altitude hiking trail part 1 back to the starting point at the train station.
At the end of the circular hike, you have the opportunity to stop off at one of the restaurants in and around Münchweiler.

Insufficient information or not accessible.
Completely accessible and fully usable.
Reasonably usable, but not completely accessible.

Info in leichter Sprache:
Der schöne Weg führt durch den Wald und an einem See und Felsen vorbei. Man hat immer wieder eine tolle Aussicht. Er ist manchmal schwierig zu gehen und etwas gefährlich, man kann sogar abstürzen. Auch stehen nicht überall Schilder. Man muss dann dem Logo folgen. Daher nehmen Sie immer eine Begleitperson mit, damit Sie sich nicht weh tun oder verlaufen.
