Az ázsiai vagy indiai vadbivalytól származó házi bivalyt nagyjából 6000 évvel ezelőtt háziasították. Magyarországra az itt megtelepedő avar népekkel együtt került valamikor a 6. század közepén. Erdélyben és Szatmárban kis gazdaságokban, míg Somogy és Zala megyében a nagy gazdaságokban tenyésztették ezt a nagy teherbírású állatot.
A közönséges szarvasmarhánál igénytelenebb, de a hidegre és a melegre egyaránt érzékeny állat a mocsaras vidéket is kedveli, így a Kerka holtága körül kialakult ingoványos terület tökéletes élőhely a bivalyoknak. Hazánkban ma már csak 300-350 házi bivaly van, amelyeknek nagy része Nemzeti Parkok területén él.
A lomhának, nyugodtnak tűnő állatokkal érdemes vigyázni, ugyanis az egyik legkiszámíthatatlanabb háziállat. Ha ingerlik, vagy veszélyben érzi magát, megvadul, és képes eltaposni ellenségét.
A Szécsiszigeten lévő bivalyrezervátumot a Kerka-mente Natúrpark Egyesület alapította 1999-ben a Kerka patak árterében, így a falun átvezető útról jól lehet látni az állatokat.
A rezervátumot alapvetően génmegőrzési céllal hozták létre, de fontos szempont volt kialakításakor az állatok bemutatása a látogatók számára, illetve a legelők természeti értékeinek és a tájképi értékeinek megőrzése is. Szécsiszigeten a nem kívánatos beltenyészet elkerülése érdekében két különböző tenyészetből való bivalycsorda lett telepítve. Az évek során több bivalyborjú is született, így a rezervátum elérte célját.

- Ha a Szécsisziget, bejárati út megállónál szállunk le, a főútról nyugatra, Kerkateskánd felé fordulunk, átmegyünk a kerka fölött - a híd két oldalán látjuk a bivalyokat.
- Ha a Szécsisziget, vegyesbolt megállónál szállunk le, a falu főutcáján megyünk tovább, elhaladunk a templom és a vízimalom mellett, majd a két oldalt találjuk a bivalyrezervátumot.
