128 km circular route of the Canary Island La Gomera in 8 days without the highest point of the island, which is reached by the GR-131.

Almost every day has more than 1,000 meters of ascent and descent because the volcanic island is already heavily eroded and the outgoing ravines have cut deeply into the coast. The paved sections are very limited, the paths were formerly connections between settlements. With over 9,000 meters of elevation for the round, we already surpass an Everest ascent. Those planning an island crossing should refer to my description of the GR-131.

Since 2002 (as of 2017) there has been no continuous rain along the coast, hikers pass many abandoned, terraced fields that are no longer cultivated. Only in February 2018 was there more precipitation again, which filled the reservoirs.

    Author’s recommendation

Accommodations must be reserved more than half a year in advance, especially in winter; unfortunately, there are no mountain huts on the well-developed trail.

    Safety information

In some sections, surefootedness and a head for heights are recommended, even though the path always has the width of a sidewalk.

Strong storms and supposedly sudden showers should not be underestimated on the cliffs of the coast – at the crossing of all riverbeds, a support pillar is concreted on both banks.

    Tips and suggestions

The GPS data of the GR-132 on the official page of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture are incomplete (stages 1, 2 and 3 are missing). The Gomerarunde GR-132 does not always follow the official GR-132. The route on Wandermap from 2017 already shows the correct route for stage 1 (which is day 8 for me), but stage 3.1 is shown instead of the recommended stage 3 (day 6 for me), meaning the 128 km total length is not reached. The same route forms the basis of the loosely written English description on Hikingisgood: here, the same direction as in my description (clockwise) is suggested, and the issue of overnight accommodation and drinking water is also addressed (unfortunately, the island only has one official campsite).

    Roadbook

Start and end in San Sebastian de la Gomera, with the question of walking direction arising. The two longest stages are the first and the last. Almost every day has more than 1,000 meters of ascent and descent because the volcanic island is already heavily eroded and the outgoing ravines have cut deeply into the coast.

The recommendation to reverse the walking direction compared to the marking, i.e. to start at kilometer marker 128 and walk towards kilometer marker 1, is mainly because the first daily stage to Playa de Santiago follows the coast more than the connection to Playa Hermigua, which only runs along the sea for the first and last meters.

The GR-132 is passable in both directions.

    8 daily stages:

Stage 3 (original stage 6): Alajero - La Manteca - La Dama

Stage 4 (original stage 5): La Dama - Playa de la Iguala - Eremita de Guara - Valle Gran Rey

Stage 5 (original stage 4): Valle Gran Rey - La Calera - Merica - Arure - sometimes exposed to Alojera

Stage 6 (original stage 3): Alojera - Chorros de Epina (junction of shortcut 3.1 to Vallehermoso) - Santa Clara - Punta del Aluala - Playa de Vallehermoso

Stage 7 (original stage 2): Playa de Vallehermoso - Las Rosas - National park centre Juego de Bolas - (Abrante -) Agulo - Playa Hermigua

Stage 8 (original stage 1): Playa Hermigua - Parque Natural de Majona - El Palmar - Enchereda - Altos de Uteza Jaragan - San Sebastian de la Gomera

    Public transport

Arrival by plane usually takes place via the neighboring island Tenerife, which has two airports. For both airports, the ferry terminal Los Cristianos (photo) is recommended as a starting point for the crossing to La Gomera. Both airports are served by the Titsa express bus line 343: From Tenerife South Airport (TFS) the Titsa line bus 343 runs about 20 minutes and cost €3.70 (2020), from Tenerife North Airport (TFN) the line 343 takes about 60–75 minutes and costs €12.40 (2020).

The island La Gomera has its own small Gomera Airport (GMZ) near Playa de Santiago, which we also see on the second stage of the GR-132, but it is only served by local airlines. If taking a local flight from Tenerife, note that Gomera Airport is 35 km from San Sebastian de la Gomera and 47 km from Valle Gran Rey.

The ferry companies Fred Olsen and Naviera Armas operate several times a day within an hour between San Cristianos on Tenerife and San Sebastián de la Gomera; the crossing costs about €40 per person and direction (as of 2020).

Since free accommodation for late comers is practically unavailable and camping is officially not permitted, there is also the option to take the early bus daily from San Sebastian de la Gomera or Valle Gran Rey to the starting point of the daily stage.

Tip: In the bus station of San Sebastian de la Gomera, there is also a market hall and a large well-stocked supermarket in the basement.

    Buses on La Gomera:

Line 1 Línea 1 – Valle Gran Rey – San Sebastián de La Gomera €5 (as of January 2018)

Line 2 Línea 2 – Vallehermoso – San Sebastián de La Gomera €4.50

Line 3 Línea 3 – Alajeró – San Sebastián de La Gomera €4

    Line 4 Línea 4 – Vallehermoso – La Dama €5

    Line 5 Línea 5 – Vallehermoso – Alojera €4

Line 6 Línea 6 – Valle Gran Rey – Airport €6 – currently no connections

Line 7 Línea 7 – Airport – San Sebastián de La Gomera €4 – currently no connections ending at the airport

Line 8 Linea 8 - Vallehermoso - Valle Gran Rey

    Author’s map recommendations

The OSM or outdooractive map of La Gomera should be saved in advance on the smartphone with the alpenvereinaktiv Pro app to overcome dead zones. The map "Camina de Gomera" is available free at the tourist offices on the island, although in my 2018 edition the GR-131 but not the course of the GR-132 was marked.
