Accommodations stage 4 Valle Gran Rey:
The tourist highlight of the island of La Gomera is Valle Gran Rey, recommended is the natural beach Playa del inglés. Here there are numerous accommodations of various sizes, qualities, and price ranges. As long-distance hikers, it is often quite difficult to determine the exact day for the night here. Sometimes you manage two daily stages, sometimes a beautiful beach tempts you to stay longer. During my night here I checked many accommodations in the districts La Calera, La Playa and La Puntilla without success, everything was fully booked in January. I list a few accommodation options from the brochure of the local tourist office, as well as a list of booking platforms for a last-minute booking online:
Apartments Rivas in La Calera
Hotel Jardín Concha in La Calera
Hotel Gran Rey in La Puntilla
Apartamentos Charco del Conde in La Puntilla
Booking platforms
www.canarianfeeling.de: 150 holiday homes and apartments on La Gomera
hotels.com: large selection, good prices, loyalty program: after every tenth night, you get a credit for the eleventh night roughly the amount of the previous bookings, no points system like Accorhotels, app booking process is very easy. -: It often happens that you get a room that has not yet been renovated when you book a discounted room.
Secret Escapes, good app, booking periods often only short-term or for very special dates, special hotels at fair prices.
Groupon: useful when immediate booking function is offered, voucher system + calling is cumbersome. Article: http://wirtschaft-verstehen.de/schwierige-preisfindung-bei-groupon/
Vente privée. http://www.vente-privee.com/, flexibility needed.
HotelTonight, to book via the app you have to be very flexible because you can reserve a room only up to one week in advance. App is easy to use, confirm booking by tracing the bed with a finger.
Expedia, good for combined offers like flight and hotel, possibly rental car. However, due to loyalty program hotels.com is better; both providers belong together.
booking.com: advantage of this widely used booking platform is the possibility to cancel free of charge up to shortly before arrival.
Tripadvisor: also includes smaller accommodations, compares several platforms.
Trivago: combinations of flight and hotel.
TUI: tour operator, hotels only also possible.
Holidaycheck: link adjusted to last minute.
Ab in den Urlaub: checks several platforms.
SWOODOO: compares several platforms like booking, price monitoring by email.
Kayak: offers price monitoring under the menu item Trips, like SWOODOO.
HRS: more for business trips.
Hofer-Reisen: excellent prices for multi-day stays.
Hostelbookers: mostly dorm rooms.
Hostelworld: mostly dorm rooms and youth hostels.
Roadbook
From La Dama, we walk for the first hour on a wide forest road up to above a water pumping station in the Barranco de Iguala, where a path leads to the bay of the same name. A longer break is recommended here. Because now comes a very long ascent of more than 700 meters in altitude, mostly in the blazing sun. After the steep climb onto the cliff, we see Valle Gran Rey for the first time, then there are houses with a whale watching station (here you can get water if someone is there). And the ascent continues until Gerian is finally reached and the path flattens out. We now walk along an open water pipe towards the Eremita de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe. The GR-132 is marked about 100 m above. It is not necessary to return to the GR-132, a wide path then leads, then a trail through the cactus bushes northwards, slightly uphill back to the mark. After a few hundred meters without significant slopes, slightly downhill, we reach a crossroads.
We follow the GR-132 down to the left towards Valle Gran Rey, cross the small, rocky creek bed that carries some water, and then climb up again on the opposite side. We notice here the proximity of the tourist center, the solitude of the first half-day is over. Up at the saddle point, we are rewarded with an impressive view of Valle Gran Rey. At the same time, we see that a steep descent still lies ahead of us. We turn onto the path running along the slope to the right, which gradually becomes steeper.
Almost in the valley floor, we turn at a small house onto a path running parallel to the valley, which leads us to the small church “Iglesia de los Santos Reyes”. Behind the church, there are stairs leading down to the riverbed, which we follow more or less directly downstream on a wider path. Shortly afterwards, with “La Calera” we reach the destination of this stage.

The OSM or outdooractive map of La Gomera should be saved in advance with the Alpenvereinaktiv Pro app on the smartphone to cope with dead spots. The Camino la Gomera map is available free of charge at the tourist offices on the island, where in my edition from January 2018 the GR-131 was shown but not the course of the GR-132.
