Tar-kő
There is no need for a tower on Tar-kő as this limestone cliff rises high above its surroundings offering a stunningly extensive mountain view. Tar-kő and other cliffs bearing the name “-kő” (Három-kő, Vörös-kő, Pes-kő, Őr-kő, Bél-kő, from east to west) are limestone rocks turned nearly perpendicular by tectonic moves. They gradually lost their underlying slate support by erosion and collapsed forming a row of peaks. Towering above their surroundings they boast a stunningly extensive mountain view. Tar-kő is the 12th highest peak in the country, but the lookout point is a little lower at a grassy clearing.
You can enjoy a great view over the southern part of Bükk with round peaks of 500-600 meters. It is easy to spot the valley of Hór Creek (Hór-völgy) and Ódorvár at its beginning. In the west, the basin of Felsőtárkány stretches deep among the hills and a part of Mátra is visible also with Kékes and Galya-tető. The closest “kő” on the left with its grassy peak is Három-kő. To the same direction, in clear weather even Nagy-hegy of Tokaj is visible far beyond, too.
Unfortunately, numerous clear-cuts spoil the landscape. On the side of the hill there is a dwelling (Tar-kői-kőfülke), which used to function as a hideout for outlaws and much earlier for animals from the Pleistocene Epoch.
Tar-kő is one of the stations along the nature trail of Olasz-kapu. It guides you along a loop trail from Olasz-kapu via Zsidó-rét to Tar-kő and back via the forest reserve of Őserdő.
