Possui uma extensão de 45 quilómetros e aproximadamente 11 quilómetros de largura, envolvendo 11 mil hectares, sendo que mais de seis mil estão permanentemente embaixo d'água. A única conexão existente com o mar é um canal no litoral da Barra de São Jacinto, que possibilita o acesso das embarcações.
O rio Vouga, que nasce na Serra da Lapa em Viseu, se ramifica quando chega no distrito de Aveiro em diversos canais de terreno baixo, formando ilhas e ilhotas, e criando uma bacia hidrográfica com uma extensa biodiversidade.
