GR59 - Great Route of the Ria de Aveiro: Green Route - Canal de São Roque (Aveiro) - Parque do Areal/Angeja (Albergaria)
Explore a salt marsh area frequently visited by bird species that feed there.
This is the only stage of the GR59 that follows the banks of the Ria de Aveiro, on a section practically coincident with the first stage of the GR57. Starting at the Olympic Rowers' Quay (also known as the Canal de São Roque), facing the historic center of Aveiro and right next to the city's salt pans, the stage heads north towards the Ribeira de Esgueira Quay. At this point, the approximately 7km of boardwalks over the Ria (Aveiro Boardwalks) begin, an infrastructure that allows the exploration of a salt marsh area frequently visited by bird species that feed there. Upon reaching the Rio Novo do Príncipe, the name of the channel that leads the Vouga river to the Ria, it crosses to the northern bank, entering a very special rural mosaic, built and shaped by man, called "Bocage." A habitat of great ecological and agricultural value, formed by cultivated fields, pastures, fallow land, and water lines, embroidered and bordered by shrub vegetation where alders and willows stand out. It is along the paths of this labyrinth that the route reaches Angeja, passing by its old pillory and culminating at Parque do Areal, near the Vouga.
This route is promoted by the Intermunicipal Community of the Aveiro Region, with texts and photographs authored and maintained by them
