The flat circular route through the Bienwald follows the tracks of the former Roman road. Milestones, so-called "Leugensteine," along the path testify to the Roman past in the Südpfalz.

The Südpfalz is crossed by a 2000-year-old Roman road that runs on the left bank from Italy over the Alps, through the towns of Strasbourg, Germersheim, Speyer, and Mainz to the North Sea. At the time of the Roman conquests, it formed the land route for the development of the Germanic provinces along the Rhine. The circular hiking route runs past several points along the old Roman road. Unfortunately, the road itself has been reclaimed by the forest and can now only be recognized by a trained eye based on earth embankments. Witnesses of the Roman road are the Roman milestones, also called "Leugensteine," set along the Roman road. One Leugenstein can be found near the end of the hiking tour after crossing the K19. It was erected under Emperor Aurelius Carus and, for example, shows the distance to the former administrative seat Noviomagus, today's Speyer, as 16 Leugen (1 Leuge = approx. 2.3 km). Information about the Roman road can also be found after about 2km on a board at the "Rentnerhütte" rest area.

UFFBASSE! - Campaign for respectful coexistence in nature

    • Fire & smoking - Making fire, smoking, and grilling are strictly prohibited in the forest and must be avoided at all costs! Fires and thus major damage to nature and wildlife can only be prevented this way.
    • Be considerate on the move - Always behave with foresight, kindness, and consideration towards everyone you meet on the way
    • Nature conservation - Stay on designated paths and avoid unnecessary noise when you are in nature. Leave the forest by dusk at the latest to avoid disturbing the rhythm of nocturnal animals.
    • Picnic & litter - Take a garbage bag for the journey and take your trash home with you. Use only the furnished rest areas for breaks & picnics.
    • Leash your dogs - Please always keep your dog on a leash. Other visitors and animals will thank you.

Other sights along the way are the Wolfsquelle and the Lourdes Grotto. The grotto was built by local craftsmen and farmers following Eugen Winter's pilgrimage in 1908 to Lourdes, from where he brought back the statue of Mary.

    Safety information

Hiking on natural paths and trails - Especially in autumn, take care that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees can still fall or branches break off afterwards. Especially under adverse weather conditions, muddy and slippery passages can occur on natural paths. Not all rocks or precipices are secured with ropes or railings. Surefootedness is required in places. You should expect such path impairments when hiking. If you consider certain sections impassable for you, you should bypass them. Despite the "unmistakable" marking of the premium hiking trails, it is advisable for safety reasons always to have a suitable hiking map with you so that you can quickly find a safe area in the event of a thunderstorm or emergency. Path closures and detours must be observed.

Danger situations - In an emergency, quick help is required. Although mobile phones can send GPS signals, classical rescue points often provide the fastest assistance. These are located in places easily accessible by rescue vehicles. Remember the points with green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return there and provide the number on the sign during your emergency call. This way, rescue workers know where to find you.

    Roadbook

From the hiking car park, we walk southwards and immediately turn right into the Bienwald. After about 500m, we continue left along the Römerweg. We cross the L540 and about 100-200m after the country road, you can see an earth embankment on the left side in the forest. This is where the ancient Roman road once ran. We continue to the shelter, where we can take a break. At the information board there, we can learn a little about the Roman road. We now walk towards Hagenbach, passing the Wolfsquelle, a popular excursion spot for the people of Hagenbach. We leave the forest and walk along the L540 for a short stretch, then cross the road in front of the sports ground. On the "Geranium Path" we pass the "Lourdes Grotto" and then back into the Bienwald. We cross the K19 and arrive at the "Roman milestone." The resting place there invites another pause to take a closer look at the stone before we walk the last kilometer back to our starting point at the hiking car park.
