The flat circular hiking trail starts in the idyllic village of Neuburg. The community was still on the right bank of the Rhine before 1592 and has since been on the left bank of the South Palatinate old Rhine arms on the edge of the Bienwald.

The route first leads into the largest forest area of the Upper Rhine Plain, the Bienwald. It goes through this interesting forest area on narrow and wide paths, located between the Palatinate Rhine meadows and the Palatinate Forest. A mixed forest mainly consisting of oaks, beeches, and pines is a secret tip for nature lovers. In addition to original riparian forest areas, you find small moors or even dunes. Especially at the beginning and the end of the route, water can often be seen; water ditches and old arms of the Rhine shape the surrounding image around Neuburg. After about 3 km, the path goes up a small hill in the forest. Here you reach the high terrace, the high bank and edge of the Rhine terrace and transition to the floodplain landscape. Here you get an idea that the Rhine was not always so straight but had many bends and loops. A large loop once went past the village on the left, so the village was on the right bank. Since the Rhine breakthrough in 1592, the village has been on the left bank. Locals therefore call Neuburg "The village that crossed the Rhine."

UFFBASSE! - Campaign for considerate coexistence in nature

    • Fire & smoking - Making fire, smoking, and grilling are strictly forbidden in the forest and must be avoided at all costs! Fires and thus major damage to nature and wildlife can only be prevented this way.
    • Be considerate - Always behave thoughtfully, kindly, and considerately towards everyone you meet on the way.
    • Nature conservation - Stay on the designated paths and avoid unnecessary noise when in nature. Leave the forest at dusk at the latest to avoid disturbing nocturnal animals' rhythms.
    • Picnic & trash - Remember to carry a trash bag with you and take your rubbish back home. Use only the furnished rest areas for breaks and picnics.
    • Leash dogs - Please keep your dog on a leash at all times. Other visitors and animals will thank you.

The Rheinau Museum in Neuburg tells the story and the close relationship of the village with the Rhine, and the floating guesthouse "Lautermuschel" on the river offers delicious Palatinate dishes and drinks for refreshment afterward.

    Safety information

Hiking on natural paths and trails - Especially in autumn, note that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal uneven spots, roots, stones, or holes in the trail. After thunderstorms or heavy rains, trees can still fall or branches may drop. Especially under adverse weather conditions, natural paths may have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or railings. Sure-footedness is required in some places. You should expect such trail impairments when hiking. If you consider certain sections impassable, you should bypass them. Despite the "unmistakable" marking of the premium hiking trails, we always recommend carrying a suitable hiking map for safety, so you can quickly find a safe area in thunderstorm or emergency. Trail closures and detours must be strictly observed.

Danger situations - In an emergency, fast help is needed. Although cell phones can send GPS signals, classic rescue points are often the fastest. These are located at places accessible to emergency vehicles. Remember the points with green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return there and give the number on the sign when calling for help. This way, rescuers will know where to find you.

    Roadbook

From the parking lot, we walk along the street "Im Derrück" until we come across the hiking trail marker (blue sign with a boat anchor). We follow the marker out of the village, cross the water ditch, and turn left behind the row of trees. We continue along the path until we reach the forest. In the forest, we immediately turn left. We walk along a water ditch, cross it over a bridge, then immediately turn right after the bridge and follow the water ditch. After about a hundred meters, we turn left. Now we move slightly away from the water before turning right and walking again along the end of the water ditch, following the path continuously until a small path goes uphill to the former high bank on the left. We follow the path to the Pensioners' Hut, which is suitable for a break. At the Pensioners' Hut, you can find an information board about the more than 2000-year-old Roman road that ran very close here. From the Pensioners' Hut, we first continue toward Hagenbach. Before the town of Hagenbach and the "Wolf's Spring," we turn right, follow the marker through the forest and across fields and meadows until we reach the asphalted cycle path. Passing fields, we continue on the asphalted route until we enter the forest again. In the forest, we turn right and walk along the forest path following the marker. After a while, we cross the cycle path again, walk along the edge of the forest until we come to another water ditch. We follow the water ditch to Neuburg until we return to our starting point.

    Equipment

For our hiking routes, we recommend the following equipment as standard:

    • Sturdy footwear
    • Weather-appropriate clothing
    • Sun and rain protection
    • Sufficient supply of food and drinks, as there are not always places to eat or shop available or open.
    • Even though the paths are very well marked throughout, it is recommended to always carry a suitable hiking map for safety reasons, so that in case of a thunderstorm or emergency you can quickly find a safe area.
    • Mosquito protection is advisable in summer
