The Salamander Collection - unique in Germany In 2018, the Historical and Local Heritage Association of Kornwestheim handed over the shoe sample collection of the shoe factory "Salamander" to the German Shoe Museum in Hauenstein, consisting of over 4000 pairs of shoes and individual shoes, from the time of the company's founding in the late 19th century until its dissolution in 2004, complemented by selected historical advertising items. A selection is on display in the new permanent exhibition.
History in the First - the ROMIKA Story Whether tennis shoes, rubber boots, or house shoes - for 100 years these shoes have stood for a success story: ROMIKA. The name, composed of the initials of the founders' last names (Rollmann/Michael/Kaufmann), is still internationally known today. However, ROMIKA also exemplifies the plundering of countless Jewish businesses during Nazi rule. The TV documentary was supported as part of the re-conception of the German Shoe Museum. The history of the ROMIKA company is documented in the museum department "Dark Sides of the Shoe Industry".
The World's Largest Shoe - Eye-Catcher at the Museum Entrance Since 2022, the world's largest shoe has been a permanent feature of the permanent exhibition and is presented in a specially constructed giant display case, which is part of the newly designed museum entrance. The 7.14 m long and 4.20 m high shoe, which weighs around 1500 kg, is a gift from the Hauenstein shoe company Schuhmarke and was entered into the Guinness Book of Records in 2008.
Shoe Advertising Signs - Documents and Zeitgeist The newly designed shoe museum showcases a variety of advertising signs from the shoe industry for the first time. Signs and posters made of enamel, metal, glass, cardboard, and paper were specifically selected from the museum's collection for the new exhibition and integrated into it. The signs remind us of past and still existing shoe manufacturers, shoe stores, and shoe brands – and are also a reflection of their time.
Shoes with History – a relic from Czechoslovakia These shoes came to the shoe museum as a donation in 2021. The donor from Ludwigshafen referred to the elegant men's shoes from the 1920s as her "one-dance shoes." The manufacturer, the F. L. Popper shoe factory founded in 1893 in Chrudim near Prague, was once internationally renowned. However, Friedrich Leopold Popper was forced by the Nazis to sell the company due to his Jewish heritage. The successor company, under the direction of his sons, was nationalized by the Communists, and the company name was erased. Since 2014, shoes of the F. L. Popper brand have been produced again – in the old company tradition. flpopper.cz
