Mountain bike route 12 Hauenstein (Hauenstein-West)
Trail route that makes every mountain biker's heart beat faster! The ascents alternate with flowing but also sometimes demanding trail descents.
The singletrail area Hauenstein – Dahn combines in one route. Starting point leads first through the beautiful town of Hauenstein, then after a short warm-up past the Hauenstein barbecue area, alternating on trails and forest roads over Zimmerberg to the Vier Buchen. After a short forest road section, our first incredibly flowing and long descent trail starts. This trail is one of the highlights of this route, winding nicely, first somewhat steeply downhill, then extending endlessly down the slope. Arriving directly at the Pirminius cycle path, we take this and then a long but pleasantly ascending climb towards Hinterweidenthal. This effort is also worth it: then it goes again, partly challenging, on a beautiful narrow path downhill. Continuing past the natural lakes “Rohrwoog.” The path runs idyllically along the water. The following linking section, hilly on forest roads, ends below Gersbergerkopf. Here is also the imposing rock formation “Römerfelsen.” The small detour is worthwhile as it can be climbed well and offers a magnificent view. After this detour, it goes purposefully back on a descent. The following hairpin trail is one of the most demanding in the area, here numerous hairpins, partly very steep and exposed, have to be mastered. After this adrenaline trail, it passes the tranquil village Erfweiler first on a forest road then on an asphalt side road to Bärenbrunnerhof. A stop here is recommended. The farm's organic products are well known far beyond the borders. Then it goes steeply uphill again, directly past the impressive high rock formation “Honigfels.” Our last ascent leads us directly to a descent down to Schwanheim and from there back to Hauenstein to the train station.
OUR PATHFINDER RULES
“Out of everyday life – into nature!” A few basic rules help make the MTB tour a sustainable experience for both people and nature.
- Only ride on permitted paths. According to the Rhineland-Palatinate Forest Act, cycling on footpaths and footpaths is not allowed, except for the trails on our routes.
- Leave no traces. Take your trash home and protect our trails with your riding style. Avoid braking with locked tires. Do not shortcut hairpin bends.
- Keep your bike under control. Stay in your comfort zone, adapt speed to the situation, you must be able to stop within sight! Do not underestimate the technical and physical demands of our routes. Inform yourself in advance.
- Respect other trail users. Announce your arrival in good time, preferably with our pathfinder bell! Do not ride on certified hiking trails. Be considerate of trails used by both hikers and mountain bikers. Hikers have right of way. Let other trail users pass.
- Be considerate of animals in the forest. We are in their habitat. Give them peace and do not disturb them while feeding. Avoid riding at dusk or night.
- Do not build illegal trails. Use existing, approved routes and courses.
- Be a role model. Show through your behavior how mutual consideration works and that it leads to good coexistence for all forest users. Help by living these rules.
These rules are based on the Trail Rules of the German Initiative Mountainbike (www.dimb.de) and the campaign #LoveTrailsRespectRules of Bike magazine.

Hauenstein train station – towards Paddelweiher/Hauenstein – Hauenstein barbecue hut. From there, take the trail and forest road uphill to the Vier Buchen, then head towards Hinterweidenthal, don't miss the trail entry on the left to take the long trail back down to Hauenstein.
After a short section on the cycle path, turn left again onto a hilly forest road and at the end a nice trail downhill then past Rohrwoog to Gersbergerkopf. There first a forest road, then a demanding trail on Wölmersberg to Erfweiler. Here first forest road, then asphalt road to Bärenbrunnerhof. Initially, the ascent on a "cart track-like" surface follows uphill, then trail again to Schwanheim, the following ascent on forest road ends at the trail entry "Schnapspfad" downhill to the Naturzeltplatz Stopper in Hauenstein. From there, cross the street back to the train station.
