Memorial stone for a covered Roman bath building.

"Here, in the year 1855, the foundations of a Roman bath were uncovered. Covered again in 1857" is the inscription on a massive square memorial stone near the footbridge at Otterbach. It commemorates the ruins of a Roman bath complex, which was constructed in brick masonry. Beneath the memorial stone was the bathing building of a Roman villa, which testifies to the pronounced bathing culture of the Romans. In the northeastern part, remnants of a changing room were found. The bathers began their bathing ritual with a cold bath followed by a hot bath. They then moved on to the warm bath, where a semicircular tub was installed, and concluded their bathing experience in the sweating room. The entire building was heated with an underfloor heating system from a heating room.
