PWV Zabernweg - Red Rhombus: Stage Rheinzabern - Bad Bergzabern
This stage of the Zabernweg leads from Rheinzabern to Bad Bergzabern and passes through one of the most beautiful and fascinating forest areas of the Upper Rhine Plain: the Bienwald.
The cross-border Zabernweg (Le Tres Tabernae), over 170 km long in total, connects the three Zabern places Rheinzabern, Bad Bergzabern and Saverne (= German Zabern) and is thus named. The hiking trail starts in Rheinzabern with its Terra Sigillata Museum and runs mostly through the fascinating and multifaceted Bienwald. Besides babbling brooks like the Otterbach, through primeval and almost mystical forest areas, one can enjoy walking on level paths and trails through the largest contiguous forest area in the Rhineland-Palatinate part of the Upper Rhine Plain. Only at Schaidt does one leave the forest and enters another remarkable landscape of the Southern Palatinate: the "Viehstrich", named after the once prominent cattle farming. Here, time seems to stand still. Scattered tiny romantic villages lie between fertile fields, lush meadows, and colorful orchard meadows in the open country. At the end, it goes slightly hilly past vineyards to the stage destination: Bad Bergzabern with its famous Southern Palatinate thermal bath.
UFFBASSE! - Campaign for a considerate coexistence in nature
- Fire & smoking - Making fire, smoking, and grilling are strictly forbidden in the forest and must be avoided! Fires and thus great damage to nature and wildlife can be prevented only this way.
- Being considerate - Always behave thoughtfully, friendly, and considerately towards everyone you meet on the way
- Nature conservation - Stay on designated paths and avoid unnecessary noise when you are in nature. Leave the forest by dusk at the latest to not disturb the rhythm of nocturnal animals.
- Picnic & rubbish - Bring a garbage bag for the way and take your trash back home. Use only the furnished rest areas for breaks and picnics.
- Leash your dog - Please always keep your dog on a leash. Other visitors and animals will thank you.

Safety information
Hiking on natural trails and paths - Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can hide unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. After thunderstorms or heavy rain, trees may still topple or branches fall. Particularly under adverse weather conditions, natural paths can have muddy and slippery sections. Not all rocks or cliffs are secured with ropes or rails. Surefootedness is sometimes required. You must expect such path impairments when hiking. If you think certain path sections are not passable for you, you should bypass them. Despite the "unmissable" marking of premium hiking trails, we recommend always carrying an appropriate hiking map for safety so that, for example, in thunderstorm or emergency you can quickly find a safe area. Closures and detours must be observed.
Danger situations - In case of an emergency, quick help is required. Even though mobile phones can send GPS signals, classic rescue points are often the fastest. These are located at places easily accessible to rescue vehicles. Remember the points with the green signs and a white cross. In an emergency, return there and provide the number on the sign during your emergency call. This way, rescue teams will know where to find you.
