Rheinzabern - Otterbachbruchweg: Quality Route Wanderbares Deutschland - Dream Route
Discover the charm of the Bruchbach-Otterbachniederung nature reserve with its still untouched landscape form on the edge of the enchanting Bienwald forest.
Whether as a 2-hour evening route or as a family day trip – the Otterbachbruchweg is always worth a hike. The path is perfectly signposted and easy to walk. You experience a nature reserve with an almost untouched stream course in a magically appealing landscape.
From your starting point at the Bauernwaldhütte of the Palatinate Forest Association Rheinzabern, you repeatedly immerse yourself in the lush and shady greenery of this charming landscape. From March, you can enjoy wild garlic fields in full bloom. Along the way, you come across a memorial stone that draws attention to a Roman bath complex, which was uncovered and then covered again here in 1855. Another memorial stone on your hike is the so-called General's Grave, commemorating former battles on Schweinheimer Feld.

Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves on the ground can conceal unevenness, roots, stones, or holes in the path. You should expect such trail impediments on your hike. If you find certain sections impassable, it is advisable to avoid them. Particularly in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can become muddy and slippery.

Roadbook
At the starting point on Rappengasse, there is a starting panel for the Otterbachbruchweg. Here we begin our hike and follow the green-blue trail markings depicting the course of the stream and the layout of the Roman bath located at the edge of the path as we enter the forest. After about 120 m, it first goes left; after about 400 m, we reach a junction. Here we can decide whether to follow the marking to the right or to continue straight ahead. We go straight, and after a short stretch on the straight path, it turns left onto a trail. We follow the trail and turn left, cross the railway tracks, and eventually arrive at the L540 country road. We pass under it through an underpass and walk south on the other side of the road. After about 300 m, it turns left again into the forest. After 300 m, it is recommended to take a detour to the right to the memorial stone of the buried Roman bath. Back on the path, we continue to follow the marking, which leads us out of the forest and through fields and meadow landscapes. Another memorial stone, the "General's Grave," recalls a former battle between French revolutionary troops and Austria. After the "General's Grave," the path again leads into the forest. In the forest, we turn left towards Jockgrim. The hiking trail follows the Otterbach stream until we reach the L540 road again at the entrance to the municipality of Jockgrim. We cross the road, enter Buchstraße, and then turn left into "Untere Buchstraße." Afterwards, we turn right into "In den Grüben" street and follow it to the end. We pass under the railway tracks and follow the marking to the right into the forest. We follow the path, which runs along the stream the whole time until the district road. There, we turn right, walk briefly along the pedestrian path by the road before immediately turning right again onto a path into the forest. We follow the path until we reach a junction at a rest area. Here we can rest comfortably once more before tackling the last section. We follow the marking, turn right about 300 m after the rest area, and finally return to the junction where the path is marked in three directions and this time turn left back to the starting point and the parking lot.
