Der Südostwall wurde in keinem einzigen Frontbereich fertig gestellt. Schützengräben wurden angelegt und Panzergräben, wie hier in Bildein, konnten nur in einigen Teilbereichen gegraben, die Unterstände zumeist nur aus Holz hergestellt werden. Betonierte Stellungen gab es kaum. Die vorbereiteten Stellungen sollten mit den zurückweichenden Truppen der deutschen Armee besetzt werden. Als letztes Aufgebot wurden Ende 1944 so genannte Volkssturmbataillone aufgestellt. Diese bestanden hauptsächlich aus alten Männern, die sehr schlecht ausgebildet und bewaffnet waren. Die Reichsschutzstellung war trotz des ungeheuren Einsatzes an Arbeitskräften, die ohne Maschinen und zumeist unter unmenschlichen Bedingungen arbeiten mussten, nur ein improvisiertes Stellungssystem. Zudem wurde sie, als die Rote Armee gegen die Grenze vorrückte, kaum mit regulären Truppen besetzt. Es gab nur wenige Abschnitte, an denen die Rote Armee bei ihrem Vormarsch über die Grenzen kurzfristig aufgehalten werden konnte.
