Szombathelytől délnyugatra, a Pinka-sík közepén, a magyar-osztrák határral szomszédos Pornóapáti községhatárának szélén, a Nagyjápláni-vízfolyás mellett a térségben egyedülálló idős erdő található. Legfőbb értéke alighanem az Európában ma már ritkaságszámba menő állománykép, amit egy 200 évnél öregebb fákból álló síkvidéki tölgyes mutathat.
Az Alpokaljával szomszédos – más osztályozások szerint oda tartozó – Pinka-sík (avagy fennsík) kis falujának határában, fiatalabb gazdasági erdők és szántók mozaikjaként jellemezhető tájban található az idős, mintegy 25 hektáros tölgyes. A téglalap formájú, három erdőrészletre bontott erdőt az Országos Erdőállomány Adattár alapján gyertyános–kocsánytalan tölgyesek alkotják. Állami terület, de nem része a Natura 2000 hálózatnak, nem védett, és a természetvédelmi szempontból legkevésbé előnyös vágásos üzemmódba van besorolva.
A németes precizitással megépített, régi házakból álló takaros faluból, Pornóapátiból poros erdészeti magánúton indulunk el a falutól távolabb. A nyílegyenes út a vízlevezető árok mellett halad, először egy szomorú hagyásfákkal tarkított vágásterület mellett. Még néhány percnyi gyaloglás, és elérjük a keresett erdőt. A koros tölgyek terpeszes támasztógyökerekkel kapaszkodnak a nedves talajba, szétterülő koronával, és ahogy annak lennie kell, holtfával az erdő alján.
Egyes források szerint a sárvári uradalom (lásd még Farkas-erdő) részét képezte Pornóapáti és környéke. Könnyen lehetséges, hogy a bajor hagyományokon alapuló erdőművelés egyik utolsó itteni maradványa az idős erdőtöredék. Az Őrségi Nemzeti Park Igazgatóság munkatársai sajnos a terepi bejárások során ritka fajokat nem találtak benne, így a terület kezelőjével csupán arról tudtak egyeztetni, hogy a legidősebb korosztályt kíméljék a fakitermelés során…
