The Vienna Christmas market route starts by car at Rathausplatz, passes 10 markets, and ends on foot with a mug of punch at the Christmas village at Stephansplatz.
The Vienna Christmas market route begins at dusk and takes you to 10 beautifully lit Christmas markets. You first take a taxi to the Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz, Vienna’s largest and oldest Christmas market. Then it goes to the Christmas village at Maria-Theresien-Platz between the Natural History Museum and the Art History Museum. At Spittelberg and Art Advent at Karlsplatz, handicrafts take center stage. In the Ehrenhof of Schönbrunn, you will find not only the usual stalls but also an ice skating rink. You approach the Christmas village in front of the Upper Belvedere Palace through the garden gate on the south side. From Belvedere, you head to the Prater, where you can take a ride on the festively decorated Ferris wheel and view the festively illuminated Vienna from above. There used to be a Christmas market on Freyung, which was later moved to Am Hof. From Am Hof, you walk across the Graben to Stephansplatz, where there is a mug of punch.

Safety information
Security personnel are on the move ensuring visitors' safety. To protect against pickpocketing, the Vienna Police Department recommends carrying bags securely closed and close to the body. They also advise vigilance in crowds. A common trick is bumping, where distraction is used to steal valuables. Be cautious if you are unexpectedly soiled with substances like punch, ketchup or mustard. Thieves use such situations to pretend to be helpful while reaching into victims' bags. Another known method is dropping a wallet. While helpful passersby assist in picking it up, thieves use the opportunity to steal bags or wallets unnoticed. Never leave personal belongings unattended. Inform the police if you suspect suspicious activities.
Tips and suggestions
The Habsburg Albrecht I, Roman-German king, granted the citizens of Vienna the privilege in 1298 to hold a December market, which later took place at Wiener Graben, Freyung, and Am Hof. With the move in 1842 to Am Hof, this market was named Christkindlmarkt. In 1918, the Christkindlmarkt was moved to Stephansplatz. After World War II, the Christkindlmarkt was held in front of today’s MuseumsQuartier. During the construction of the underground car park in front of MuseumsQuartier, the Christkindlmarkt was provisionally moved in 1975 in front of the Rathaus, where it still is today. From the 1980s, smaller Christkindlmarkets also established themselves at other points in the city. A description of the 10 best Viennese Christkindlmarkets can be found here >.
