This route connects Austria's two largest cities, Vienna and Graz. The route mainly runs along bike paths, gravel roads, and quiet side streets.
There are many possible routes to cycle from Vienna to Graz; the variant via the Hochwechsel is certainly one of the most exciting and challenging.
The first section through the Vienna Basin to Wiener Neustadt and onwards to Aspang-Markt mainly follows bike paths and is therefore ideal for warming up. From Aspang, the long climb to the Hochwechsel is the biggest challenge of this route. Almost 1,500 meters of elevation must be climbed to the summit of the Hochwechsel.
The remainder of the route connects forestry roads and forest paths, partly on the route of the "Großer Jogl", pleasant side streets in the hilly landscape, and the Feistritztal cycle path. The last 70 kilometers to Graz meander through the Styrian hills, mainly on low-traffic side streets. Overall, a wonderful gravel route that can be completed at your own pace thanks to numerous accommodations along the way.

Stage 01
Vienna to Vorau (150 km, 2000 m elevation):
Long stage along the Triesting bike path and Thermal Spa bike path to Aspang-Markt. Shortly after Aspang, we leave the Thermal Spa bike path and ride along a beautiful ridge trail to Mönichkirchen. From here, it goes steeply uphill on forestry roads and cart paths to the summit of the Hochwechsel. At the top, enjoy the view before the rapid descent into the Lafnitz valley. After that, there is another climb of about 300 meters elevation before reaching the charming town of Vorau, where there are several accommodations and inns.
Stage 02
Vorau to Graz (124 km, 2100 m elevation):
On the second day, we initially follow the route of the "Großer Jogl" with a detour to Masenberg. On wonderful side streets, we reach the Feistritz valley and follow the bike path to Oberfeistritz. Then we switch to the Styrian Apple Road and—if the weather is good—make a swimming break in St. Ruprecht an der Raab. On small side streets and finally bike paths, we ride to Graz.
