A templom a 13. század végén épült, és Dél-Zala egyetlen megmaradt román kori épített emléke, így különleges értéknek tekinthető. Az épületről messziről látszik egyrészt az, hogy több korszakban épült, másrészt az is, hogy legrégebbi részei a török időket is átvészelték. A látványos bélletes kapu és a lőrésszerű ablakok árulkodnak arról, hogy meglehetősen régi építményről van szó. A keletelt, egyhajós, félköríves szentélyzáródású épület keleti része a régebbi, a szentély külső falát román kori vakívsoros párkány és falsávok tagolják. A nyugati rész építésének ideje a 18. század végére tehető, ekkor bővítették a templomot, és ekkor épült tornya is. 1965-ben a déli falához építettek egy sekrestyét, amit 2006-ban, a legutóbbi felújításkor lebontottak - szerencsére, eltakarta ugyanis a bélletes kaput. A templombelsőben érdemes megfigyelni a szentély északi oldalán egy kis szentségtartó fülkét, déli oldalán pedig egy csúcsíves papi ülőfülkét.
A templom közelében, az út mellett találjuk a 2013-ban a helyi hősi halottaknak emelt emlékművet, amelyen külön tüntették fel a polai lakosokat, a ma már becsehelyi településrész Pola ugyanis 1941-ig önálló település volt.
