The hiking trails of Pertouli are located in an area with intense landscape changes and rich history. The area around the settlement of Pertouli includes Pertouliotika Livadia, the University Forest and the outskirts of Koziakas. The routes have been planned in such a way so as to pass by the most points of interest, churches, crops, forests, meadows, springs, bridges, rivers, viewpoints, etc.
The hiking network of Pertouli consists of three routes with a total length of 16 km. All three routes start from the Pertouli square.
NATURE
Pertouli is surrounded and protected by Pindos mountains. Between them is located the large plateau of Pertouliotika Livadia which is crossed by Pertouliotikos or Xerias, a tributary of Aspros (Acheloos), which in its flow outlines meandering shapes, "klouria", as the locals say.
The forest of Pertouli, with an area of approximately 33 thousand acres, is owned by the State. It was granted in 1934, by prefecture, to the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, for the purpose of practical education of Forestry students, research, exploitation of the forest and other purposes.
One of the most beautiful mountains of Pindos is the ancient Mount Kerkitio. Its current name Koziakas probably comes from the Turkish word "Kotzia" = big and "giakas" = neck, meaning big neck, consequently a long mountain. Koziakas and all the mountains of Pertouli present karst geomorphology. Τhey are characterized by complexes of surface and underground forms and by peculiar flows of groundwater.
CULTURE
Pertouli is a mountain village in the prefecture of Trikala in the Municipality of Pyli. It is located at an altitude of 1,150 meters on the slopes of Mount Koziakas. The acquisition of the village is covered by the darkness of the past centuries. It is first found under the name "Pertouli" in the code of Varlaam Monastery in Meteora at the beginning of the 10th century.
The versions regarding the name vary: a) it came from the word "portouli" meaning small door, b) from the indefinite of the Latin verb -perfero-pertuli meaning transit road, passage, c) in 1720 a plague epidemic fell in the village, it was deserted and was re-inhabited by the guardian Triantafyllos Hatzis Bertas to whom the name of the village is due (Bertouli, the village of Bertas) and d) from the Vlach word "per" = pear and the ending of -et which indicates the place where there are many pear trees.
The peculiarity of the area, the inaccessible places, the dense forests have always privided a natural shielding and shelters but also bases for attacks. In the more recent period, that is, the Italian-German occupation and the National Resistance, Pertouli was quite important for the two adversaries.
The first buildings in Pertouli forest were built in 1940 and included an Administration building (Forest Office) and a Forest Guard house. With the war of 1940, but also later with the civil war, the buildings were destroyed due to bombing and the service ceased to function. With the re-establishment of the Service in 1951, as a Fund for Administration and Management of University Forests, the first facilities began to be built in architectural plans of the famous architect Pikionis, professor of the National Technical University of Athens, which were completed in 1966.
