On historical trails
In the southern Westerwald, clay has been mined for centuries and processed into useful and decorative individual pieces of "white gold" in the ceramic workshops along the Kannenbäckerstraße. What started long ago with salt-glazed jugs is now the epitome of Westerwald creativity and innovative artistic skill. The Ceramic Museum in Höhr-Grenzhausen provides detailed stories about this craft, and ceramic potters also happily allow visitors to watch over their shoulders while they work in their workshops.
Westerwald was also known for its mineral resources. In visitor mines, such as the closed visitor mine "Grube Bindweide," one can experience today how raw materials were extracted back then.
On foot through the Westerwald
Unforgettable landscape experiences await all those who set out to explore the Westerwald on foot.
The WesterwaldSteig is one of the TOP TRAILS OF GERMANY – Germany's best hiking trails, and is distinguished as a quality route running 235 km through the diverse low mountain range.
Off the WesterwaldSteig, the so-called Wäller Tours and the Kleine Wäller invite you for short and day trips with breathtaking views all the way to the Siebengebirge and the Taunus.
Experience the Westerwald
Cyclists can also reach great heights if they show some endurance. The challenging Westerwald loop leads in three stages from Linz on the Rhine over the heights of the Westerwald to Diez.
A cultural experience for more leisurely cyclists is the Nister cycle path. Along the varied route, you can stop in the picturesque town of Hachenburg or visit Bad Marienberg.
