At the heart of the tranquil municipality of Friedewald in the northern Westerwald stands Schloss Friedewald, an impressive example of late Renaissance architecture and a popular destination for culture and nature enthusiasts.
As early as 1580, Count Heinrich IV of Sayn had the distinctive main building with its magnificent Renaissance façade constructed on the site of a medieval castle, which continues to impress visitors today. Over the centuries, the castle experienced decay, reconstruction, and renovations: Following comprehensive restoration between 1885 and 1895 and further expansions before World War I, the former ruin was transformed into a representative noble seat. During the Thirty Years' War and later, the estate served politically important functions – it was a refuge for the county and long served as the residence of local ruling families. Today, Schloss Friedewald is considered one of the cultural gems worth seeing in the Westerwald: The estate is in private ownership and can be visited by appointment.
Park & Outdoors
The castle complex is framed by a landscape park of approximately 5 hectares in English style, which delights visitors with exotic tree giants such as over 100-year-old giant sequoias and a lovingly designed rose garden. The skillful use of terrain heights creates surprising perspectives of the castle and its surroundings.
Architecture & Details
Architecturally, Schloss Friedewald features a rectangular floor plan:
- The street-side east wing with its distinctive onion dome tower and the south wing date back to the 16th/17th century.
- The north wing and the upper floor of the east wing were added around 1913.
Magnificent stonework, including the Hercules motif, the builders' coat of arms, and figures of the five cardinal virtues, make the façade a worthy subject of study for art and history enthusiasts.
Tip for Visitors
Even though interior visits are only possible by appointment, a stroll through the castle park is worthwhile (note any access and safety notices on-site) and a look from the outside at this historical site in the Westerwald.
