Middle Rhine

The Middle Rhine truly lives up to the region’s name: the Rhine winds its way through the river valley, while legendary castles and palaces sit enthroned atop the hilltops. When the steeply sloping vineyards glisten golden in the sun and ships glide across the water, you can actually believe you hear the Loreley singing at the famous “Rock of Destiny” near Sankt Goarshausen.

Maps and trails
Like few other regions in Europe, the Middle Rhine offers a truly successful blend of unique natural beauty and a history dating back over 2,000 years. Extensive hiking trails, good food, and first-class wines have long made the region between the Siebengebirge in the north and Bingen in the south a magnet for tourists. The historic towns, the many castles and ruins, and the Roman border wall, the Limes, which begins here, bear witness to an eventful history. Due to the river’s importance for transportation, settlement, and viticulture, the Upper Middle Rhine Valley was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.

Culture and Culinary Delights Along the Middle Rhine

Just as old as nature itself are the many legends and stories that surround the Middle Rhine region. The beautiful “Loreley,” who threw herself into the Rhine from the rock of the same name, or the “hostile brothers” who lived in Sterrenberg and Liebenstein Castles—those who believe in these legends can look forward to plenty of exciting stories.

Both body and soul will delight in the region’s diverse cuisine. Numerous wine taverns, wine bars, restaurants, and beer gardens line the paths. The Rhine has always been an important trade route, and this is reflected in the region’s culinary traditions: exotic spices found their way into the local diet early on, and German cuisine quickly blended with elements of French haute cuisine.

Hiking Along the Middle Rhine

The Middle Rhine is a great place to explore on foot. On a hike along one of the region’s many premium loop trails—such as the “Traumschleife Fünfseenblick”—you can get up close to the diverse landscape. If you want to set aside a little more time, you’re in good hands on one of the two long-distance hiking trails along the Rhine. The Rheinsteig runs along the right bank, while the RheinBurgenWeg runs along the left bank of the river.

But the Middle Rhine can also be a sporting challenge. On the Middle Rhine via ferrata, rugged rock faces provide a thrill. But the tingling sensation on the footholds and ladders gives way to a pleasant euphoria once you reach the viewing platform. As you gaze out over the Rhine Valley, you’ll find yourself dreaming again before you know it.

On Two Wheels

Cyclists can leisurely explore the Middle Rhine Valley along the Rhine Cycle Route. The route winds from town to town, always staying close to the riverbank. And when your legs start to feel heavy, quaint inns and wine taverns invite you to take a break. Those looking for a change of perspective can switch from the paved road to the waterway and enjoy the views of the vineyards from a sightseeing boat.

The Boppard Mountain Bike Park, however, is not for the faint of heart. On the 1.1-kilometer-long freeride trail and the singletrack trails in the surrounding forests, mountain bikers can let loose to their heart’s content—adrenaline rushes included. Pulling off tricks on ramps and wall rides might even make you feel like a legend—if only for a brief moment.

Absolut empfehlenswert!

Ausserordentlich liebevoll gemachter Weg.

Also Hölle aufpassen!

A good ride under power for the first hour up the twisting forest zigzag bends.Desend gradually and shortly turn left along what looks like it used to be the main road, but now deserted. A bit confusing through the industrial estate as there are two barriers across the road, but can be got round by riding on the pavement. As the estate is left, the route takes you along the road, but the cycle track goes the same way. After Flerhershohe, I started on the main road and was rewarded with a fantastic view of the Rhine Valley.
