Upper Palatine Forest

The Upper Palatinate Forest is a low mountain range landscape that extends over parts of Bavaria and the Czech Republic. The highest elevation is the 1,141-metre-high Hohe Bogen. The Upper Palatinate Forest is characterised by its varied nature, which is characterised by forests, rivers and lakes. Particularly attractive are the numerous valleys and gorges that run through the region.

One of the most important sights in the Upper Palatinate Forest are the historic towns of Regensburg and Weiden, both of which can look back on a long history. In Regensburg you should definitely visit the cathedral and the Stone Bridge. In Weiden, the Old Town Hall is especially worth seeing. Also worth a visit are the Leuchtenberg and Flossenbürg castle ruins and the Maximiliansgrotte dripstone cave.

The Upper Palatinate Forest is a true paradise for hikers and cyclists. The most beautiful hiking routes include the Goldsteig, the Burgensteig and the Naabtal cycle path. The cycle path network is also well developed and offers numerous opportunities for tours of all levels of difficulty. In winter, the ski areas at Ochsenkopf and Grosse Arber are especially popular.
