Wine culture on Lake Neusiedl
Lake Neusiedl is one of the most famous wine regions in Austria. The conditions for winegrowing are ideal: the Pannonian climate with many hours of sunshine and the ideal soil conditions contribute to the outstanding quality of the wines from Lake Neusiedl. Around the lake you will find a large number of wineries, many of which allow you to taste the fine wines on the spot. The dominant varieties include Welschriesling, Pinot Blanc and Zweigelt.
The best way to explore the vineyards and cellar alleys is by bike or on foot. On beautiful cycle paths you can roll through the hills in the west or the plains on the eastern shore. Again and again there is the opportunity to stop for a splash or a glass of fresh grape juice and to find out about the wines and their cultivation. There are also numerous themed wine trails, especially in Gols, Weiden and Illmitz. In the evening, it is best to meet for an aperitif in one of the beach bars and enjoy the sunset, which is particularly beautiful here.
Delicacies at the wine taverns and Buschenschanken
The variety of regional and seasonal cuisine in the Lake Neusiedl region is matched by the number of restaurants. If you have an appetite, you are just as welcome in the rustic village pubs and wine taverns as you are in the cosy inns and restaurants that have been awarded toques. Pannonian hospitality knows no bounds and offers something for every occasion.
Now, in summer, the Heurigen are particularly popular. After an eventful day on Lake Neusiedl, there is nothing better than a hearty Heurigenjause with a glass of wine or a refreshing spritzer.
Around the lake you will find numerous wine taverns ("Heurigen). Some of them have regular opening hours, while at others a branch from the pine tree or a straw wreath at the entrance to the courtyard indicates that they are currently open. In addition to their own wines, the Heurigen and Buschenschanken also serve all kinds of homemade specialties. The offer ranges from fresh spreads, cheese and seasonal vegetables to sausage and meat products. The simplicity and informality of the Heurigen creates a coziness that can only be found here.
Outdoor activities in the Lake Neusiedl region
Almost unlimited recreational opportunities make the area one of the top vacation destinations in Austria. Lake Neusiedl is also considered a paradise for sailors, surfers and kiters thanks to its steady wind patterns.
For cyclists, there is a network of bike paths over 1000 km long, offering numerous opportunities to explore the vast plains of the steppe landscape by bike. Those who prefer walking will find numerous mostly flat paths in the region, which guarantee wonderful distant views and invite you to take extended breaks in picturesque vineyards.
