Explorer route - The Zitzmannsdorfer Meadows
DIVERSE MEADOWS
The Zitzmannsdorfer Meadows, the largest contiguous meadow area in Burgenland, appear completely flat at first glance. Slight differences in elevation and the resulting varying soil moisture lead to a mosaic of semi-dry grasslands and wet meadows. Extensive mowing and backwater measures in the old drainage ditches help to preserve these valuable wet habitats for rare animal and plant species.
A long, thin, downward-curved bill is the "trademark" of the Great Curlew. It prefers to breed in moist, treeless meadow areas where its typical, flute-like trilling courtship song rings out in spring.
Male moor frogs appear bright blue during mating season, while they are inconspicuously brown for the rest of the year. To attract females, they gather in shallow water and perform their mating calls together in choruses.
The Danube crested newt is best observed during its migration to and from spawning waters. During the mating season, the male has a tall, jagged dorsal crest, giving it the appearance of a small dragon.
A true specialty of slightly salty wet meadows is the very rare and highly endangered salt meadow iris. The plant grows up to half a meter high and produces elegant blue-violet flowers from May to June.
One of the many botanical rarities in the Zitzmannsdorfer Meadows is the highly endangered marsh gentian. The ideal habitats of this slender plant are wet meadows and fens, where it adorns the meadows with blue flower spots from June to October.
