Safety information
As many cycle paths are agricultural roads, agricultural traffic must be expected there. Mutual consideration ensures these paths remain pleasant for everyone.
Austria: There is a bicycle helmet obligation for children up to 12 years old. Reflective vests are not mandatory at dusk, in darkness or poor visibility, but are definitely advantageous. Here is the Austrian bicycle regulation.
Slovakia: Bicycle helmet obligation for all children under 15. Adults are only obliged to wear a helmet outside urban areas. Adults are strongly recommended always to wear a bicycle helmet. Cyclists riding on the roadside in reduced visibility must wear visible signaling elements or a reflective vest.
Hungary: No helmet obligation for cyclists. The maximum speed outside built-up areas is 40 km/h. A speed of 50 km/h is allowed if the cyclist wears a helmet. At night and in poor visibility, all cyclists must wear a reflective vest.
Travel documents: Valid ID card or passport is mandatory!

Where is the best place to start?
Our tip for the start of the route is Neusiedl am See. Here is the main train station where trains from Vienna (only 40 minutes by train) and Bratislava arrive, and the entrance to the Neusiedler See cycle path is only a few hundred meters away. However, you can also start in any other town along the route, as it is a circular route! Be sure to pay attention to the wind conditions, as cycling even against a gentle breeze can become tiring over time. So whether you cycle clockwise or counterclockwise, it is best to decide according to the current wind direction.
How long should you plan for the tour around Lake Neusiedl?
Fit cyclists can easily tackle the tour in one day. However, if you don't want to miss out on the natural spectacle, cultural highlights, family time, and enjoyment, plan two leisurely day stages! Depending on what else you want to see and experience, consider the additional distance and time incurred.
What is the path surface like?
The Neusiedler See cycle path is mostly nicely paved. Only a short section between Weiden am See and Podersdorf am See is gravel in the conservation area of the Neusiedler See - Seewinkel National Park. Thus, the paths are suitable for both touring bikes and mountain bikes.
