A whole weekend paddling program near Budapest? Yes! Island circumnavigation. Among water tourers, it is a clear concept: Szentendre Island. Paddle around it! Up the Szentendre branch, back down the Vác branch. It is at once nature hiking, active recreation, and paddling achievement. Sleep overnight at the peak, the Danube Bend’s most popular camping spot!

    Author’s recommendation

    • During paddling, expect lively motorboat and boat traffic all day in both branches of the Danube. Downstream, don’t paddle in the middle but closer to one of the banks!
    • Going against the current, it helps that the water flows less quickly near the bank. Paddle along the bank but watch out for obstacles in the water!
    • Start with a boat that comfortably fits all your touring and camping equipment! You can stop in any settlement on the way to rest or eat, as during the season, many restaurants or snack bars welcome passers-by everywhere.
    • However, don’t extend your breaks on the first day! Upstream, depending on the boat type and your fitness, expect 6-10 hours of pure paddling time.

    Safety information

During paddling, relevant laws must be followed. A life jacket of appropriate size for each person in the paddle boat must be kept on board. Wearing it is mandatory for those who cannot swim and for children under 14 years! Motorboats must be avoided with a minimum side distance of 50 m. Pay special attention to navigation signs: they may mark dangerous spots and the edge of the navigation channel. Avoid the groynes of the Vác-Danube branch with special care (groyne: a perpendicular cross dam built with stone riprap on the shore)!

    Roadbook

Start heading upstream but stay close to the right bank (the Buda side) until you reach Szentendre Island! There, cross the shipping lane in front of the marina pontoons and switch to the left bank (the Szentendre Island side)!

Here, paddle under the Megyeri Bridge and stay on this side until the Szentendre free beach! It’s better if you paddle near the right bank again on the water that speeds up by the ford. It is hard work to get past the boat station and the marina, but after that, it’s good to paddle on this side until Tahitótfalu.

Under the Tildy Zoltán Bridge, however, head again to the left bank, the island side. Above the bridge, at the bend, it’s ideal to paddle up the small side arm behind the island – of course, only if there is enough water in it. You will see this: if water flows, then you can get out of this branch above the entrance shoal. There, cross the shipping lane again, and paddle up along or between the islands on the right bank, depending on water level and your mood, and stay on this side until the Dunabogdány beach!

Due to the strong current, it’s advisable to switch sides again before that and paddle along the left bank to the island tip. Where the shore is already gravelly, if you land, you will find good camping spots on both sides of the island tip. From here downwards in the Vác branch, the path is easy. Above Vác you'll find the first groynes. They regularly appear until Göd; avoid all of them with at least a 50 m side distance! Pay attention to boat traffic while paddling! The Megyeri Bridge signals the approach of the route’s end. From here, it’s 2,300 m to the lower tip of Szentendre Island, from where you can already see the goal.
